Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Lampreys don't have skeletons made out of cartilage.
Also, that doesn't answer my question: if they look like ammoecoetes, then they're neotenic, not primitive-looking.

Lampreys don't have skeletons made out of cartilage.
Uh, yeah they do. It's literally one of their two defining traits. "Has cartilaginous skeleton" and "jawless."

Wikipedia

The unique morphological characteristics of lampreys, such as their cartilaginous skeleton
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

Um, yes they do.
Oh, my mistake, then.

Also, considering that we were talking aboot Yoshi a while ago, I found this that talked about how his eggs could work:

Yeah, the progression theoretically works, and I suppose the results could be rather advantageous, but I doubt it'd be advantageous to justify the amount of energy being expended into such an adaptation.

I don't even really like this song that much but the title is pretty relatable sometimes, I guess.

Considering the fact that Yoshi lives in a world with fire-breathing dragon tortoises, sea serpents, and killer mushrooms, I'd say that every survival trait counts.

This gave me an idea: a bird which, even as an adult, sneaks into other birds' nests and pretends to be a juvenile so that it will get fed. It could mimic various species' begging calls. That strategy would only be effective during some birds' breeding season, but maybe the parasite bird could migrate to keep up with breeding season somewhere.

Perhaps it could also do this only during part of the year, and then switch back to more conventional methods of feeding when the breeding season of their host ends?

A idea which isn't maybe not very original, and I'm sure someone had it already, but I want to share it here anyway:

ratwhales:

After humans as well as a lot of megafauna is gone rodents are among the first who conquer new niches.
A new successful group are the ratwhales, medium to large (8 m) herbivores and picscivores.
Overall their body looks like a crossbreed of dolphin and manati but their tail flukes propel sideways and
it's still covered with "scales" which have now a hydrodynamic purpose. Herbivorous species have very broad incisors
to feed on sea grass and other vegetation while some piscivorous forms have forward facing very sharp teeth which they use to spear fish. These very long structures are hidden normally inside the snout, when the mouth is opened and the mussel is drawn back it helps to generate a negative pressure which can suck in the prey.

I have some sketches of several species, if someone wants to see it I can upload them here.

A flat-out eutriconodont macropredator, the lion or T. rex of the group. Simple, but effective.
