Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

No they are soviet secret weapons.

The whole thing about Tremors is we have no idea what the creatures are.
Then clearly you haven't seen the second movie :D

Well, technically we still don't know. They were here since the Precambrian, but what are they? These are the most popular theories (according to their wikipedia page):

-Aliens
-Cephalopods (there's a sci-fi site that classifies them as such)
-Weird vertebrates

Well they runined it with the second film.

Perhaps they are something that evolve totaly indpendently from all other animals.

Has anyone ever speculated about the natural history of Independence Day? The movie does little hinting at what their homeworld was like or why they communicate the way they do.

I hinted at a rough natural history for the ID aliens in my earlier post in this thread. It leaves out some specifics, such as the relationship between the organic suits the aliens wear and the aliens themselves. I think it's been suggested that the suits are in some way another species entirely. Not exactly sure how that works.

It has been speculated that mitochondria were actually a seperate organism but moved into simple cells and both proved to be so useful to each other that they became one organism. Perhaps this is the same thing?
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

That works on a cellular level, but its much hard to explain the equivalent of a human having a capuchin monkey living in their chest.

I don't think the suit is an independent organism. Its likely just some sort of "biologically engineered" biosuit, just like their motherships and fighters seem to be fairly organically based.

Well, how come no one has mentioned the good ol' xenomorph from Aliens?
They're probably the most dangerous predatorial animal in space.

BTW, talking about the ID4 movies, i remember the novel saying that the alien ships were animals from the alien homeland; breeded during several millenia to become ship-like things...then the aliens would 'remove' their insides and fill them with techno-organic stuff and things like that.

Also, species like Wookies, Critters, the Species things and many others can turn into awesome spec evolution debates.
How come a canine (yes, Wookies are canines, not apes) does develop an anthropomorfic, tree-dwelling morphology? Or why the critters are carnivorous, spike-launching monsters that can roll into a ball and move in that way?

Go in there for some odd stuff that could make you puke, and ask for some free sketches. :)

Well, from a biologist's point of view (or rather, an exobiologist's point of view), the species of Star Wars have far too much basis on Earth's life. And I actually think they would consider Wookiees as primates since the original concept was more of a lemur. XP

Actually they were based from a real dog (presumably the director's pet), but I get the point. I do agree Star War's animals are too earthly, but nobody said they couldn't had been placed there by humans
