Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

pretend this says something funny

This is the thread for discussing what your ideas are; this is of course, more than just sprouting the ancestral groups of your creations, but will help establish behavioral and appearance details before actually writing up your creature.

This should also help you make sure it is plausible (and thus decrease the chance of rejection) and coordinate with other members to create organisms that interact with each other (say.... two different species of a unique family created by two different users).

(discussing on skype is also okay)

Currently working on one with the "ravine-dwelling titanopteran native to Dusa" part. Perhaps they could be relatives?
Sure thing, although yours would be smaller I presume, because of course you need to be reasonably large to specialize on vertebrates; I'm thinking somewhere around 32-40cm in wingspan, obviously would be huge.
Just posted my group.

I've been on a big project work spree lately(this is a good way to avoid doing things I actually need to do...) - is there a limit to how often we can post? Is one submission a day OK, or should I wait a bit longer in between?

I have a bunch of extra material for my 2 existing submissions, then I've got another 2 plants, an environment profile, some dimorphodonts, some birds and 3 field guide-style spreads of fish, gastropod and lepidoptera ideas along with some small mammals/synapsids. (example):
Spoiler: click to toggle
Hope that is not too much...I don't want to flood the project :/

Is anyone else working on any fish? Would anybody else like to work on fish with me?

I got a few ideas myself:

Moose/boar like proboscideans from Telu.
Beaver-like dicynodonts.
Dilophosaurs with dagger claws (like those of megaraptorans).
Bipedal, robust, fluffy and heavily armored thyreophoran that's got only one clawed stubs for arms.
4 m long alligator-ish phytosaurs from Isa.
Lemur/wallaby like omnivorous eosimians that live in rocky areas (probably mountains).
Bobcat sized arboreal, quoll-like herpetotheriid from Isa that feeds on small vertebrates.
Roe deer-sized dichobunid from Telu with both horns and babyrousa-like tusks.
50 cm toad-like temnospondyls with thick and short tails.
A wolverine-like morgie from Telu, but much smaller.
Pig-ish quadrupedal heterodontosaurids.

Would anyone have a problem if I used their suggestions for my own entries to the project?

Well, it really depends whether the people who suggested those things want to or are planning use them. Probably best to ask them first.

On the topic of ideas, would a symbiotic relationship between a bush and a eusocial hymenopteran (nectar in exchange for protection) be plausible in the context of BW?

Ok, thanks for the advice.

I don't see why such a relationship couldn't evolve, but it depends on what kind of hymenopteran you had in mind. A bee is more likely to evolve this relationship than an ant for example.

Yes but the ant isn't exchanging nectar. The tree provides a home in return for the ants defence of it whereas a bee could gain nectar in return for its defence of a plant.

Apologies I didn't realise the tree did provide nectar. I still think a bee is a more suitable insect though.

I wonder if there would even be ants in the first place. Even Hawaii has no native ant species. I guess maybe some floated in on a log or something.

Or other hymenopterans or even beetles could take their place.

Devil's gardens are where I got the idea from.

Most likely, though, the Anisian version wouldn't have ants per se.
