| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. You can suggest lineages that weren't mentioned on the flora/fauna topic here. Remember, be realistic with what can be present on the island. Also watch out for things that might swim/fly away from the island. |

Podocarps (fleshy seed cones), plus whatever fruiting angiosperms arrive (Fuschia?), plus some derived from seed ferns etc? Maybe others. Edited by Monster, Oct 5 2014, 02:46 PM.

There might be a chance that coconut trees could be on the northern island. |

I've made this suggestion before, but I'll make it again here so it's an official suggestion: Freshwater leptocleidid plesiosaurs. |

More of an idea involving aquatic animals, but, how would we keep them restricted to these islands? I was thinking that since it'd be near impossible, we have them be the cause of many sea monster myths in this world. |

Well that is a good one. I have suggested multiple times about keeping the island's endemic aquatic species as coastal animals, with nothing being pelagic, or brackish water. And if an animal gets off the island, chances are it won't affect human history, if at all. |

Projects and concepts that I have stewing around Extended Pleistocene- An alternate future where man died out, and the megafauna would continue to thrive (may or may not include a bit about certain future sapients) Inverted World- An alternate timeline where an asteroid hit during the Barremian, causing an extinction event before the Maastrichtian. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and notosuchians make it to the present, along with a host of other animals. Badania- Alien planet that has life at a devonian stage of development, except it exists in the present day. Ido- Alien world where hoppers (derived flightless ballonts) and mouthpart-legged beasts are prevalent. Leto- Life on a moon orbiting a gas giant with an erratic orbit; experiences extremes of hot and cold. The Park- ??? Deeper Impact- a world where the K-Pg extinction wipes out crocodilians, mammals, and birds; squamates, choristoderes, and turtles inherit the earth. World of Equal Opportunity- alternate history where denisovans come across Beringia and interact with native fauna. Much of the Pleistocene fauna survives, and the modern humans that end up crossing into North America do not overhunt the existing animals. 10,000 years later, civilizations exist that are on par with European and Asian societies. The Ditch- Nothing is what if seems.. | |

I had actually planned to mention vagrants occasionally coming upon Africa and Madagascar and causing cryptid pterosaur sightings occasionally. So when can we start making species, anyway? |

Now. As in, you can explain your concepts in development and then post the final draft in WIP for review today (like me). |

BTW, just so we can all be clear, this isn't the thread for concepts you've made; this is the thread for suggesting them. Maybe we should have a separate thread for that.... |

Okay, I have 1) Why were geckoes an immediate no? If herbivorous iguanas somehow rafted all the way to Fiji, then I'd assume that generalist geckoes would be able to do the same. However, if a no is a no, then so be it ![]() 2) Someone said something about megaherbs. Didn't they evolve specifically in environments without large herbivores, which for the most part, these islands do have? Thank you for all considerations. When something comes to mind, I will certainly post it ![]() EDIT: Nevermind, misread and now I know there's earlier synapsids. Edited by Fireplume, Oct 7 2014, 11:23 PM.

We have several sorts of early synapsids present, for sure - see "Egghog", for a good example. If I'm not mistaken, megaherbs are also not canon but were merely discussed. Also, I would like geckos. There can still be a lot of diversity in non-squamatans beside. |

What about snakes? I'm quite sure those pythons or maybe some tougher group of elaphids and colubrids can easily make their way to the island by rafting. They need very little amount of water and they can go without food for very long time too. |
