Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

This is what the islands currently look like, there are three main ones with the largest on top and two smaller ones underneath. A healthy sprinkling of much smaller islands surround them.

This the thread where we shall:

- Decide the placement of the biomes and overall climate of the archipelago (within reason).

- The exact appearance of the islands (their shape, position and number of them).

- Points of interest for the islands.

- Their names (the three (or more depending on what we decide) main ones require names now, smaller ones can be maintained on a need-to-know basis). One word names are strongly suggested.

- Anything else you want to suggest.

Currently what has been strongly suggested for the islands:

- A subtropical climate from the top to a temperate climate at the bottom (an average cold of -10c was suggested by me).

- A maximum of 4 main islands (main island on top).

- A combined area just over Hateg Island (I'm thinking of raising the total area to 85 000 square kilometres to maybe allow for animals reaching 1.5 tonnes).

Please comment on as much as you can below.

So right now here's what's been suggested:

- Mountain range and large lakes across largest island and possibly others.
- Names are Isa (largest island), Dusa (middle one), Telu (southernmost one).
- A humid temperate climate not unlike South Island.
- Tepis and dense bogs.
- A large ravine running through a portion of Dusa.
- Dense forest covering most of the islands.
- Increase Telu’s size by a little.
- Add a volcano or two somewhere.
- Possibly wetter biomes on the western side, drier on the eastern.
- High mountains over portions of the islands, allowing for cloud forests.
- An extinct volcanic crater on Isa, allowing for endemic species.
- Low-lying areas near the coasts allowing for mangroves (estuaries further south).
- Cave system in Dusa connected to ravine.
- Wetlands/marshes somewhere.
- Prominent coral reef off the north coast of Isa.
- Seaside cliffs.

You have roughly 4 hours until the details are decided so get your suggestions in before then.

Maybe a few sparser forests on the eastern sides, but still have the islands mostly forested. And maybe a cave system on Dusa, possibly connected to the ravine.

(Also I believe the largest island is called Isa, not Isla)

I'd like to propose marshes/wetlands somewhere, also coral reefs and seaside cliffs.

Perhaps a large reef off the Northern cost of Isla?

I'm liking all the ideas so far. Coastal cliffs on western Isa, maybe?

Maybe a not so big grassland or temperate savanna in Telu.Maybe a large river system in Telu too.

Relating to volcanoes, perhaps we could include some form of basaltic formations, like columnar basalt along the coastlines, or maybe even as part of the mesas* if we have any.

*"Tepui" is only used to describe mesas in South America, so we'd have to call ours "mesa" since we're in the Indian Ocean and all.

Yes this sounds good, in keeping with the overall climate and the (possible) mountain range(s). The flora would be different but it doesn't necessarily mean it won't still be a full on forest.

Alright, the deadline has been reached (although any details can still be said for a bit).

Here is what I have gotten:

- Mountain range and large lakes across largest island and possibly others.
- Names are Isa (largest island), Dusa (middle one), Telu (southernmost one).
- A humid temperate climate not unlike South Island.
- Mesas and dense bogs.
- Sparser forests on the eastern sides.
- Prominent coral reef off the north coast of Isa.
- Seaside cliffs (western Isa?).
- Bamboo forests somewhere.
- A moderately-sized savanna/grassland in Telu.
- Basaltic formations along coastlines (or part of mesas), such as columnar basalt.

So I guess you're all happy with these characteristics because these will be the last few minutes to add anything or change anything.
Soon will appear the last pre-development thread, thank you for being patient and cooperating thus far.

Southern Indian ocean, around 75ºE and 45ºS. Keep in mind that these aren't he official coordinates or anything, just a rough idea.

Note that that red point would likely be the southern most point of the island chain, so it would have to be built north from there. Note the island chain is 85,000 square kilometers in size, in other-words roughly the size of Ireland.
