Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

READ THIS WHOLE THING.

This is what the islands currently look like, there are three main ones with the largest on top and two smaller ones underneath. A healthy sprinkling of much smaller islands surround them.

This the thread where we shall:

- Decide the placement of the biomes and overall climate of the archipelago (within reason).

- The exact appearance of the islands (their shape, position and number of them).

- Points of interest for the islands.

- Their names (the three (or more depending on what we decide) main ones require names now, smaller ones can be maintained on a need-to-know basis). One word names are strongly suggested.

- Anything else you want to suggest.

Currently what has been strongly suggested for the islands:

- A subtropical climate from the top to a temperate climate at the bottom (an average cold of -10c was suggested by me).

- A maximum of 4 main islands (main island on top).

- A combined area just over Hateg Island (I'm thinking of raising the total area to 85 000 square kilometres to maybe allow for animals reaching 1.5 tonnes).

Please comment on as much as you can below.

Define points of interest. Are you referring to the fauna and flora or the geography?

Do you usually call an elephant or a cycad a point of interest?

I suggest a mountain range across at least the the largest island. Also some large lakes somewhere would be nice.

Yeah, probably in the southernmost island of the three main ones.

Should the islands' names have some form of continuity with other island names in the Indian Ocean or would it not particularly matter?

For island names, I suggest Isa, Dusa, and Telu, which are the Proto-Austronesian words for one, two, and three, according to wikipedia. Isa would be the biggest, and furthest north, Dusa is the small middle one, and Telu is the most southernly one.

It doesn't matter much as a whole, because you're coming up with them so they could have a continuity if you wanted.

As I suggested in the Skype chat, I'd really really love mountain ranges on the islands, as well as, if possible, tepuys. I'd suggest a humid temperate climate, akin to South Island, and, if possible, some dense bogs.

I'd like the islands to be volcanic, and to have wetter biomes on the western sides, and drier biomes on the eastern sides.

While it would be implausible for the islands to be volcanic in origin (since they don't usually last very long (relatively) due to the magma eventually moving away from the cone and then the island collapsing under its weight), I might be able to add a volcano or two somewhere, maybe one on one of the tiny islands or one of the large but smaller ones.

I don't really know about the drier/wetter biomes on the sides thing entirely, but I'll still factor it in as much as possible.

Ah, if the volcanoes aren't very plausible, then just don't use 'em. I just thought they would look cool.

A large ravine running through Dusa, maybe?

I'd say they should be mostly covered in dense forest.

Enjoying our azure blue world

Considering continental islands today like New Zealand and Madagascar have volcanoes, I see no reason why our islands can't. I doubt they'd be particularly plentiful though.

The only suggestion I have right now is make Telu a bit bigger, and have a modest mountain chain in the center. I have a feeling the southern part of the archipelago is going to be my baby :)

Are humans going to exist here (even if they are not necessarily present on the island?) I was thinking we could have an indigenous subspecies of feral dog on the island, just like there are dingoes in Australia.
