Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

pretend this says something funny

READ THIS WHOLE THING IF YOU WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS COMMUNITY PROJECT.

Alright, we're this close to beginning this shibang, this thread will decide the details of this project and render them official and more or less unchangeable (minus a few details).

- The island(s) originally split from Southeastern Pangaea during the end of the Anisian (approximately 242MYA) along a stretch of the Tethys Sea, as seen here (http://i.imgur.com/AVnJTLR.png).

- The main immigration events to this/these island(s) happened during the Mid Triassic (Southern Pangaea), Jurassic and Early Eocene (India); flying and marine animals from any time after the Mid Triassic were capable of immigrating at any point since then.

- The island(s) have a rough surface area of around 82 000 square kilometres (a bit larger than Hațeg Island), allowing for animals exceeding one metric ton.

- The island(s) is/are presently located in the Indian Ocean, closer to Africa than Australia, and closer to Antarctica than Asia.

- The overall climate of the island(s) is subtropical to temperate, not unlike New Zealand.

Now those are the characteristics of the island that have been more or less decided (some of it just by me), any of it that you think need to be changed should be said in the comments belong.

Now there are a few more things to decide: the time (Early, Mid, Late) and location (Africa or Asia) of the Jurassic Immigration Event and the type of island.

---

Remember, the types of islands:

Island A

Quote:

Island A: Your typical lost island. One large island, a few tiny ones along its coast mainly there just for aesthetics. Nothing particularly special, and all the fauna and flora will have a chance to interact, with few barriers. Very simple in form and the basic.

Island B

Quote:

Island B: A small archipelago. One distinct large island and two or three smaller ones. Allows for relatively distinct wildlife for each island and thus a larger diversity of life but keeps it uncomplicated.

Island C

Quote:

Island C: A large archipelago. Lots of islands, both large and small. No real distinct "main" island. Unique wildlife and possibly microclimates across each island. Much more complicated.

Island D

Quote:

Island D: Worn down island. Very similar to Island A, but probably more diverse and messed up biomes (more specifically it means the biomes themselves will be smaller individually but more spread out). Also potentially aesthetically pleasing.

These will also be the island(s)' appearance unless someone has a suggestion/recommendation for the island(s) shape.

Please comment your opinions/choices on as much as possible and the reasons for them below.

Time for a twist!

I change my vote to island B.

Troodon, Hananas, and Zorcuspine voiced opinions in the original concept thread but have not voted here yet. Should we wait for them?

I don't even really like this song that much but the title is pretty relatable sometimes, I guess.

I vote for island B.
This looks fun I've never been part of a community project before.

Mmmmm, fine; I guess I'll extend it to an unspecified amount of time because everyone thinks so.

Thanks Myo, I almost missed the voting period for this thread. Between B and C, B is definitely my favorite so I vote for B.

Thanks Myo for waiting ;)

I vote for island type C and for the rest it looks fine. We can make something out of almost every species and I think it's more fun to work with lesser-known animals.

Thanks, Myo

On second thought, I like island C over D, but it'd still be nice to have the aesthetics of D on C

I also vote early Jurassic Africa

I vote B. Also, I hope this won't go like the other community projects (which seemed to have died before I joined).

I changed my vote to C cause I think it's more interesting to work with. Especially with large groups

I change my vote to Early Jurassic.

We should be good to close voting now.

I agree, it seems everyone that was interested in this project has indeed voted. Anyway, the winners are pretty clear now.

Anyway, here are the votes.

Island A: dust.

Island B: IIIIIIIIII

Island C: IIIIIIII

Island D: I

---

Early Jurassic: IIIIIII

Mid Jurassic: dust.

Late Jurassic: II

So it appears the winners are Island B and Early Jurassic; I hope you're mostly happy with the choices. If you're not completely satisfied with these choices (and even if you are) be ready for the next pre-creation development thread where I'll go over the specifics and layout of the islands with you people.

So do we write species from a purely factual perspective, or a perspective where these species are not completely understood (when we get there).
