| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Just saw the Superman clip. It was very different from the Batman one. Something tells me that since this is a darker universe, it was only natural that the already dark Batman rogues got even darker. I also wouldn't call it gratuitous, because Joker has done worse in the main comics. |

See, here's the thing about Gods and Monsters: it's not so much "grimdark" as it is more realistic. Sure, the heroes kill people, but this is probably what would happen in any sort of realistic scenario. And it's not like they're psychopaths or anything; Batman kills someone who's pretty clearly beyond any sort of redemption, and Superman only kills as a last resort after trying to settle things peacefully (and Brainiac outright TELLS him to kill him). I mean, it doesn't really seem any darker or edgier than the old Justice League cartoon.

Actually, this is just a darker universe. Consider that none of the Trinity are the same as they usually are, which is Bruce Wayne, Kal-El/Clark Kent, and Princess Diana of the Amazons. Superman is the son of General Zod, and likely Ursa. Batman is a vampiric Kirk Langstrom. Wonder Woman is Bekka, a New God. In a realistic scenario where each of the heroes is the same person they usually are, that is, Clark and Diana, then they'd still be the same as they usually are, except for certain details the comics never address. Bruce is a different story, since the very concept of Batman is unrealistic in the modern world. Superman would be off helping areas in need when not stopping some big alien threat or living his daily life. In a realistic scenario, he'd be in Nepal right now, fixing up the damage caused by the quake, or killing the vast swarms of mosquitos in Africa with his heat vision. While she goes about her business trying to protect the modern world, Wonder Woman would inevitably cause immense controversy, since her existence proves the religion of Ancient Greece correct, and every other religion wrong. White Christian soccer moms would be so pissed! In a realistic scenario, Batman wouldn't exist. When Alfred gains custody of Bruce from the dead Thomas and Martha, he'd have put the boy into therapy so he could overcome the trauma and become a functioning member of society, who uses his wealth to aid children in Gotham and around the world. Because Bruce would have actually gone to therapy, he wouldn't be on the streets fighting crime. Because he's not fighting crime, he doesn't meet the Red Hood Gang at the Ace Chemicals plant, and he never pushes the Red Hood into a vat of Chemicals. As a result, there is no Joker. Because there's no Joker, there is no Harley Quinn, or anyone else created through Joker's actions. There is no Robin either, as Dick Grayson goes into therapy and continues to work in the circus. Jason Todd dies on the streets. Tim Drake never becomes Robin, instead, he live with his crippled father. Damien Wayne is never born. All in all, Gotham is a less shitty place to live, since Batman isn't fucking things up. Edited by Kamidio, Jun 13 2015, 02:08 PM.

The problem isn't the death toll, the problem is presentation. For instance Harley Quinn may have always had been a mass murderer who has in fact killed children in other products, but depicting her walking around in a dark basement in little more than lingerie while casting decaying corpses as her "all american family" is emo fanfiction levels of ridiculous. "Bomb" did manage to use it to its advantage, in that Braniac was at his most sympathetic and Superman actually had a decent reason to kill someone. However, presenting a Superman that is basically a 90's anti-hero is not cool. |

But again that's pretty much the point Bruce Timm is going for. If this were Clark Kent, I'd be unpleased, but since this is an alternate universe version being the son of Zod, I can forgive that. In fact, maybe this is meant to be a deconstruction, similar to Watchmen I warrant. |

Watchmen isn't a deconstruction of the anti-hero, it's the people who tried to imitate it without understanding it that led to the wave of 80s and 90s anti-heroes. |
