Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

But they added gay characters before, how is this any different? How is this a more "Proper Representation?"

It's just good to see more and more representation in media.

I don't really see the problem here. I mean is it really that much of a stretch to make Catwoman of all characters bisexual? I mean it's one thing when Dc turned Wally West into a young African American kid, where the drastic shift in backstory that accompanies it has made it basically Wally-in name only. But making Catwoman bisexual doesn't conflict with any previous canon, and as long as it's handled responsibly I'm all for it.

Oh now I didn't say that was a problem. (Though it can be from how other people might interoperate it.) Scout's honer I support LGBT and approve of gay marriage, but In the case of Selina Kyle... I kinda don't know what to make of it. Maybe Linkara or the Last Angry Geek will help clear things up and see how it either works or derails.

I wouldn't imagine it would derail anything.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/03/17/dc-comics-pulls-controversial-batgirl-cover

Argh... I wanna argue about this, but I just can't seem to pull off the right words for it...

So recently, a variant cover for Batgirl #40 was to show the Joker having a gagged and beaten Batgirl, crying while he smiles and draws a smile on her face with her own blood... and people are on the side of approving it.

It was taken down on the artist's request-- that is after receiving actual DEATH THREATS... where to start?!

Look, I'll be honest, I myself did not approve of the original variant, but it's not because of it's violence towards women... ok that's partly why but that's not what bugged me the most.

See the problem with the Joker variant had less to do with the tone and more with the context, both in story and from the perspective of people who were already familiar with Barbara Gordon's part in the Killing Joke, in which the Joker shot her waste down, and proceeds to take photographs of her paralyzed and bleeding to near death, and showing them off to her father, Jim Gordon to drive him mad.

It was a prime example of "Women in Refrigerators" back then, and it was something that Alan Moore himself regretted doing (And let's not get started on DC Editorial's part in saying "Cripple the B****!"

So to show off Batgirl as a victim in a rather brutal and sick fashion... CAN turn some people off, and give folks a rather uncomfortable feeling, which even if that was the intent, it MIGHT not come out in a good way. In fact, that instance technically is a sexual Assault! (Not exactly a rape per say, though)

But here's the thing though... that's not what the issue was about, so in other ways than one the variant contradicts itself. And people started sending death threats to the artist! Yes Seriously! As mean spirited the variant itself was, that is tame compared to the death threats that the artist himself received in real life!

Some people even go out to say that people are just amateur feminists and think that they wouldn't have cared if it were a male character-- No! That's not the case at all!

Even if it were say... Jason Todd, that also would have been appalling since we all know his history in the "Death In The Family" story, in which the Joker beats up the Jason, then as Robin, with a crowbar then blows him to kingdom come before Batman could bail him out.

The context of the cover is that it shows the title character as a victim, and not only that, but a victim of an event that I imagine would have been painful, frightening, and humiliating that's who is shown to be badly hurt and pathetic-- which was not relevant to the current storyline! It's more preppy, upbeat and light hearted, something that the creative team are trying to accomplish when most of the current lineups for DC since the reboot were "Dark" and "Edgy." But with this though, it's fun!

But the cover is anything but fun. Although the idea if it were meant to be dark in of itself isn't a bad idea, but again it has to do with context.

I don't know... I feel like there are other things I feel I should address in defense of the artist. I mean he did draw it very well, and the colors were nice... but again the context is just...

Okay, now let's get to another beef: The Death Threats.

I actually did a little more research and here's something that's been recently confirmed: The artist did not receive death threats, the people OBJECTING to it did!

See there is a lot of debate going on as to whether the variant should be approve or not, some people actually liking, where as others obviously not. And from other perspective I can understand why, as the personal moral standards depending on the view can be complex and left for each individual to explain or decide for themselves: Some say to oppose it is to oppose freedom of speech, others say it's merely a matter of preference or artistic taste.

Now, I cannot argue against freedom of speech; and I get it's meant to be a homage to the Killing Joke... but again, it has to do with context.

I really don't know what else there is to say, I admit I did not like the variant, but that's my stand as everyone else has his or her own stand.

So I just found out about the latest Batwoman storyline. I think I'll go cry in a corner now. Oh well, at least Justice League 3000 is getting better.

What about the Suicide Squad movie? It makes me wish Heath Ledger was still alive--to me, he will be the ONLY Joker.

Apparently Jared Leto is only early on in his 'transformation'- remember people used to laugh at Heath Ledger for doing it before they saw the spectacular final result. I heard Leto's one is going to be a very dark take on the character (though I doubt they're going to go full on 'Death in the Family' style) so I'll be subscribing to any updates about it.
