Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

You know what annoys me the most... It's the common misconception that by making something darker that makes something better.

Well in recent years DC Comics has showcased how wrong that is, first with Identity Crisis, now with of course... The New 52.

Even in Cinema with Man of Steel (Not Superman) it's just trying to be another Batman movie. DC Comics is trying to make every hero into Batman.

Superman is Batman, Green Arrow is Batman, Shazaam is Batman... Actually I take it back Bruce Wayne is not as petulant nor as unrepentant as Billy Batson is now... Because why do we want nice characters in comic?!

Case in point, that according to Joe Quesada-- I mean Dan Didio it's that every Superhero should be an angsty loner with no fulfillment in his or her life other than to be "Just the hero". (Why else would Batwoman not be married... other than to relate to single men... wait what?!)

So yeah, DC comics is trying to make every hero into batman, DC is trying to be Marvel and now Marvel is trying to be DC, everything is just gore, sex, no-no words, and amorality.

I apologize if this sounds like some rant for the sake of ranting, but this is just my thoughts on how DC stooped now a days as anyone else would think.

I don't even really like this song that much but the title is pretty relatable sometimes, I guess.

I agree that a lot of comics are going for more serious tones nowadays- I would argue this is due to a general cultural change as we become more aware and accustomed to negative stuff in the world, as well as a change in what comic books are for, who reads them, and where they are produced.

Actually, I think DC is desperately clinging to the old ways and completely ignoring new trends. They have a tendency to put up polls to find out what the fans are thinking and pulling them when they don't get the results the want.

The world is a negative place. Comics are changing to reflect that. If you enjoy pretending that it isn't then that's fine, but comics are an industry and must cater to their largest demographic as such. And the largest current demographic is dark and gritty realism.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

Comics are escapist fiction. If I wanted to see the world for how it really is, I'd go outside!

As I said Paraksy, not everybody wants to get into the dark and gloomy stories, DC is only doing what it's been doing since 2011 to attract the same readers it always had: Straight Young Adult Men.

Why not go outside that demographic and attract women, children, more homosexual readers, as well as an older demographic?

Do you guys prefer reading a fictional story in a realistic setting (i.e. Many books to do with modern teens.) or fantasy/middle age world (i.e. Harry Potter, Ranger's Apprentice, Lord of the Rings, Artemis Fowl). This more applies to novels, but is relevant to the question of escapist vs dark comics. I personally don't find the former interesting at all, but love the latter. Unfortunately, the former is far more common.

Teen Titans GO.
I both hate and love that show.

When it comes to comics I think everything is batman since batman is pretty much the only successful superhero DC's ever had (and the only reason I can't decide DC or Marvel) exempting young justice but I find that too cliche.

Then you have to read Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, or Thor because those comics will prove that not every superhero is Batman.

Well as you said they are making them into batman. Wrong wording, sorry.
Also Captin America and Thor are Marvel characters.
Also man of steel is superman (not called superman VI but it stars superman)
