| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! He wasn't Christian. He was raised in a non-practicing Jewish family and considered himself Agnostic. |

I am sure he once said categorically he does not believe in a personal god, and he had a very different definition of god than of a giant human in the sky. I think the God Delusion had a chapter about it right at the start, and how the book was not about Einsteinian gods. Some great heros of mine are Barnes Wallis, the epitome British wartime science, who developed the idea of the bouncing bomb. Alan Turing, a brilliant, yet tragic hero. The codes his Colossus helped were noting compared to enigma. And after the war, he could not pursue computing because his machines remained top secret. Nobody wanted his unproven technology. Joseph Whitworth, a man obsessed with order. Forget Stevenson and Brunel this man was the father of the industrial revolution. He invented the micrometer which allowed to standardization. Without that parts were not interchangeable. He tried his hand at many things and when he had a look at the army's rifles he declared them wrong in every particular and designed his own new ones. The British army rejected them, army types can be very conservative. But the French army did like it, as did the confederates. I like his because he was a success, and so many of the men who shaped the modern world were not. |

Ah, what a noble fellow. He who has done so much for science. I used to think magnetic reversals were real, but it turns out that it just looks that way because rocks got flipped over when the fountains of the deep broke open. I think he should be knighted. But aren't geomagnetic reversals real? Or is that just Earth's axis wobbling? |

Yes, quite. His Imperial Majesty Akihito is another favorite. He is the Emperor of Japan and he choses to study Gobies. He could have just sat on his arse and done nothing, but he showed what excellent monarch is like. But this is a little of topic, as he is not a particularly great scientist. He is a plodder, one of those unnoticed people that allow the great leaps forward to be made, and keep us moving while we wait for them. |

Sorry. I just can't see sarcasm on a forum as easily as I can see it in real life. Thanks for telling me. |

Well it is very hard to spot in just text unless you know the context. Anyone who really thinks Kent Hovind is a good scientist, scratch that anyone who thinks Kent Hovind is a any kind of scientist should be avoided at all costs. |
