| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Those paintings and the idea they were made by Neanderthals have actually been known about for quite a while. Its good to see though that they are finally gaining more acceptance. These are but one good example of evidence showing the Neanderthals have been greatly underestimated and that they were in fact fully sapient beings like ourselves. |

Apparently, the new giant pterosaur from Transylvania--the one they're calling "Dracula"-- has an estimated weight of 500 kg. Could it have been flightless? |

It could just be a Hatzegopteryx that's unusually big (that's saying a lot), but we need to wait till a proper description comes out. Either way, there's no way it could have been 500kg unless it really was flightless. |

That's what I was thinking too. Some rather sensational news articles claimed it had a 66-foot wingspan, but even a cursory glance at the photos of the skeleton show it was not that big. It apparently had a similar wingspan (i.e. 40 feet) to Quetzalcoatlus and Hatzegopteryx, yet weighed twice as much, which is more or less what you would expect to see in a flightless pterosaur if one existed. The real question, of course, is if it actually weighed as much as its describers are claiming it did, or if it was "just" another Quetzalcoatlus-sized azhdarchid. |

There's no paper or anything yet (apparently in the works, to hit in a few months), and the general opinion is one of skepticism. Mark Witton has said that what he (and other pterosaur workers) knows of the specimens in question and that they don't support the claims, so either there's something new and secret in addition or it's all bollocks. I've been told by people I find reasonably trustworthy that it's not from Hateg and that it not being Hatzegopteryx is pretty solid, but I can't confirm how much validity is behind this. DK probably knows more about this, but I haven't talked to him. Oh, and the 20m estimate is scaled from ahanguerids, something closer to other azdarchids like Hatzegopteryx is more likely. |

Yeah the 12m wingspan would mean it dwarves the 10-11m of Quetzocoatlas, Hatzegopteryx and Arambourgiania. Given its similar location to Hatzeg, it would definitely be a very robust one. Quetzocoatlas is often estimated at 250kg in weight, and Hatzeg often at 300-320kg due to how robust it is, with arambourgiania being somewhere in between. There's also the Nemegt pterosaur that was slightly smaller and less robust than Hatzeg, but probably slightly heavier than Quetzocoatlas, and also a few similar in size pterosaurs from France, Spain and Hell Creek if that graph is any indication. If this is real, then it could well push the limits for pterosaur size. If it can be trusted that is. Whatever way, it's nice to have more Azdarchids around. |

So it was big, maybe the heaviest pterosaur known so far, but it wasn’t a 20-meter-wingspan colossus. If it really did weigh 500 kg, it might well have been flightless, which would be a first for a pterosaur. But I think it’s more likely that it’s weight has been overestimated.
