Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

That the ice free corridor came too late to explain the earlier cases of human colonisation in the Americas is old news. Still, its good to see more people coming around to admitting it.
Also, incidentally, the early colonisation of the Americas was probably not any single event but rather something involving multiple waves of people.
So what does this mean about the extinction of the Pleistocene megafauna?
I don't imagine much; there's very little reason to think humans weren't the main cause of the extinctions at the end of the the last ice age. Thing before that, around 30,000 years ago, that's less clear.

Okay, the important thing I got from the paper that most articles don't mention:
Quote:

G. c. rothschildi and G. c. thornicrofti are now subsumed under G. c. tippelskirchi [6] and G. c. camelopardalis (this study), respectively.
Wikipedia needs updating in this regard, I'll bring it up on some talk pages.

Finally, there's more Giraffe species now!
Discontinued projects:
The New Ostracoderms (i might continue with this project again someday)
The Americas (where in 58 million years from now in the future North and South America has both become isolated island continents)

All Expansions (my attempt at expanding the universe of All Tomorrows by Nemo Ramjet aka C.M. Kosemen, started June 6, 2018)
Anthropozoic (my attempt at expanding the universe of Man After Man and also a re-imagining of it, coming 2019 or 2020)
New Cenozoica (my attempt at expanding the universe of The New Dinosaurs and also a re-imagining of it, also coming 2019 or 2020)
All Alternatives or All Changes (a re-telling of All Tomorrows but with some minor and major "changes", coming June 10, 2018)

That there were multiple giraffe species has been known for a while now, so I'm not sure why that articles treats it as something that's only just been discovered.

We knew there were likely different species, but we weren't solid on what was and wasn't a different species. This seems more definitive compared to "There's probably more than one species".

Finally, there's more Giraffe species now!
"finally"?

as the population of Giraffids hasn't gone up, so now we have even more endangered species of giraffe.

Meh, it's all just a matter of definition anyway.

And this is a really strange thing to say. If the different kinds of giraffes weren't worth saving individually before how are they worth saving now? Nothing about the giraffes' genes, phenotypes and ecological role has changed whatsoever, only our defintion of where we draw the lines.

Because of the common moral in the modern day about conservation that we should save as many species as possible. Few people care about a subspecies, but if they hear that a whole species is going extinct, they're gonna be more likely to do something. Changing it from one species to four will likely make people care more about giraffe conservation.

So, essentially we trick the public into caring about stuff so we get what we want.

Sounds legit.

Considering the public's general apathy towards animals, it's more than legit. Besides, people got upset when a black rhino subspecies died out anyways

I'm not sure it can be legit to get people to care about what they don't want to care about.

At any rate, Rodlox's post made it sound as if the world is suddenly worse off than before, which simply isn't true. Nothing whatsoever has changed. There is no need for alarm any more than there was before.

I don't see how this is tricking the public into anything. If they didn't care about conservation it wouldn't go anywhere, whether we want it to or not. If they set the bar at the species level, and we say "Yeah, turns out this is the species level", then they start caring. We didn't change giraffes to four species to make the public care, but that'll likely be a side effect.

We also count as public, by the way. How often on this forum do we talk about it as a third person?
