I'm working on a story and I'm developing it slowly. It is about a universe made by magic that also created tons of other creatures and most notably gods. I'm writing and designing it around my own made mythology that includes these gods and creatures. The world though is now controlled by an evil group of wizards and demons alike. These were made by an ancient beast of magic that was also created when the universe was formed. A group of 4 children must go to defeat the demons/wizards and take the magical items they posess in which the gods are "sealed". Places that are planned so far: - Tenor town - Giant city with many musical influences. It resembles Paris in some small ways but it is different for the rest. -Big forests (to be named) -A huge forest of temperate climate(2 magical valleys, giant tree cities) - Albom mountains - A huge mountain range. (mines) - The unending sans - A huge desert ruled by shadows -The Tomtarian archipelago - Numerous Medieval towns. -The undergrounds sanctuary (the equivalent of the heaven) -The flying hell (the equivalent of the hell) -The tarago - Huge plain ecosystems (fields of infinity) -The giant abyss - A giant ocean (Ignokuruna city) (Also I think the Tomtarian archipelago) |

I approve of this idea. So would: -Recently-defeated Good dictatorship -Good wizards holed up in towers being douchebags -Evil pragmatic evil wizards taking over the world and killing people for blood magic be a suitably grim idea for a fantasy world? |

Sounds awesome! Perhaps the next bit which could tie in the nature magic is that they start striking deals with nature spirits to combat these so called 'Evil' wizards. However since these are beings of nature they have no concepts of collateral damage or morality so the death tolls start becoming insanely high. For instance a town may call upon the help of the local nature spirits to halt the advance of the evil army, the nature spirit proceeds to flood most of the valley and although the town is spared the harvest is entirely washed away causing thousands to die of starvation. This in turn leads to a divide among the rebels, some turn towards using more mundane magics such as alchemy and perhaps even technology to turn the tide. Other more extreme people start these deals with nature spirits causing unholy amounts of damage but they are in essence destroying their own cause at the same time since nature has no interest in these wars. |

Still, no harm in brainstorming for our own entertainment. Also, I approve of Dial's nature-spirit idea. |

I prefer an approach that there is no "good" magic or "evil" magic--it's all in how you use it. Heal Hitler with your powers and let him continue murdering and it's evil magic. Kill him with necromancy and animate his skeleton to do something useful and it's good magic. However, in the Pathfinder setting I'm working on, magic can come from the planes, and those can either house aspects of reality that aren't particularly sociable (one of the players is an Oracle of Fire) or creatures aligned with one of the alignments. In such a setting, whether or not you can use the magic is determined by what you do with it. Using good magic badly gets your power source cut off, and the same with evil magic. It's worth noting that "evil" in my setting basically means "pure egoist who enjoys hurting people." No one goes around saying "Ha ha I'm evil!." The OP might be interested in a similar idea. |

First of all a big thanks , especially to DialfortheDevil and Nanotyrannus, because you made me think twice before implementing some cliche things into my story line. In my world there are not much pure good or pure evil beings. Most of the beings have a certain amount of both in their souls and only a few have a pure soul. This is viewed from a certain aspect as both sides have good and evil sides to their group. There isn't a pure good side and pure evil side , just a small amount of people that are pure good or evil. The definition why good is good and evil is evil is mainly because most people like the "good" side more , because rulers that are on the "good" side are for democratecy and think the key to rule the world is to use the power of a bigger group of people instead of the brute power 1 person can posses. Good is mostly for life, against dead.Good is also the force mostly placed by Gods but Gods are like the word balance itself. Good uses recovery spells and light spells. They try to take over the world in a well-mannered but still brute. Good hasn't only good aspects to it's side. They also think that the world can only be one when there is only 1 big country. What they don't tell is that they want the government to exist out of people they have chosen. So they want to rule the world as a dictatorship but by normal people they see this as a good alternative to the evil dictatorship and they gratefully welcome the "good" people to their town and cities. They also use telephaty , teleportion spells and object displacement. Evil is mostly for death , against life. Evil is the force mostly referred with monsters and other unnatural beings but they are just following their instincts. They think the brute force of 1 individual can lead to the greatest empires and civilations. They are mostly hated by the people and live in lonelyness and havoc but they secretely make plans to take over the world.People think most of them are either dangerous or crazy. Beings from the "evil" side use necromancy, fire magic , blood magic and explosions. They also take life with all sorts of death magic. They say this is necessary for the improvement of the world because they think a group of people can't rule the world because the can't reach a certain goal. As you see really none of the both sides is good or evil but they are just more to one of the sides. The most people in my universe are for the balanced world , one ruled by both people from evil and good sides. They think that the constant fight between the two sides is not necessary and an alliance between the 2 would be much appreciated. So tell me does this work out or is this complete bullshit ?? I'm sure in for suggestions as I want to be different from most other fantasy universes |

Then why are you even calling them good or evil? It really isn't unrealistic to make a world with good and evil. What's unrealistic is to have anyone be pure good or pure evil, and I'd like for once to have a setting treat "monsters" as just "people." |

Well if the person is created from the sun or some light sources he is arthodox light Thats why I'm adding pure beings. Its not like its ever been used before. It has been used over and over. So im adding it for the sake of the plot base Well with the monsters it would not fit into my world and the storyline. It is interesting though. Never seen it that much before. But this is mostly for the beast monsters. Maybe cyclope like organisms can infiltrate with the "normal" people |

Again another thing, why are humans 'normal'? Why would they be? In this universe you need to justify why they are so normal or even abnormal. I had to consider this in Apotheosis and eventually settled on the fact humans are abnormal as only they have souls. When creating a fantasy world it is good to challenge your initial ideas and ask why you so instinctively go for them. |

Since your story deals with light and dark, I may recommend playing/reading up on the game Dark Souls' lore. It also deals with light against dark, but it proves to be much more complex than what the game first shows you. In the game, light is just what the gods use to instigate their tyranny over the land, while dark is related to humanity's origins but also extremely corruptible, twisting beings into hideous abominations. If you want a good source for the game's lore, this guy made a good deal of videos that explain its lore: https://www.youtube.com/user/VaatiVidya/videos |

You can also check out these TvTropes links for ideas on how 'light' and 'dark' can be used for both good and bad deeds. In general, TvTropes is a good website to use when creating fiction work, as it shows both how things have been changed/done in the past, and what things haven't been done yet in the field you're working in. Well Ill look at your links ready. I said normal 'cause they are the humans we know. They are the ones we could "normal" that's why its between hooks. In my world several races make the whole civilation. This consist out of "normal people",dwarves, giants, elves etc. In parts like the unending sands slaves are commons and mostly giants and dwarves are used for this job. Ill update tomorrow with the first 4 gods |

And now I'm wondering why only humans have souls. Anyway, why does demihuman = "normal?" Yes, we in reality are surrounded by humans, but that's an out of universe reason, not an in universe reason. Also, I recommend consciously avoiding any of the "Humans Are" tropes. Just have humans be another intelligent species; no one's special. Some species will be adapted to particular niches, but these are ecological niches. A dwarf-like race might be better adapted to underground environments, and that might be reflected in their culture, but they aren't naturally better at gemcutting, they just have easier access to gems and so could refine that art more easily. |

That's exactly what I was planning to do. I am also changing from dwarves and elves to my own races. Mining people ~ These sapients are the ones that mine everything and maintain the bridges & and roads in the mountains. Fishing people ~ These sapients are the ones who fish the most. They are blue , have a tail and swimming things between their fingers. Building people ~ These are big sapients that live everywhere and are the ones that have been hired to build all sorts of buildings around the land. Trading people ~ These are one of the 2 human sapient. These are specialized in trading and lumberjacking etc. Dessert people ~They also trade but they have some other characteristics. Mysterious people ~ Not much is known from these sapients. It is known that they live in giant tree cities. Ill do the gods tomorrow because I havent got that much time today. I will have 6/12 gods then |

Hi Hananas, I'm going to go ahead and look at the races in your last post, if that's ok with you. It seems like you've created these races based on either their environment or their main occupations/lifestyles. In regards to the latter, what sized populations are you working with? It would seem a bit strange to me if there was a large population of Trading people, and if all of them were defined by the fact that they have traders. It would be good if the different races were made more individual through other things, such as their religions, customs and culture. Also, remember that not everyone within one race will act and behave in exactly the same way. Some Mining people may not like mining, or some Trading people may be socially awkward and not like trying to trade with others. If you want to get an idea of how different tribes and cultures can be identified but still different amongst one another, look at examples in different human cultures (such as the Aztecs or Inuits). So, do all of these races interact with one another to benefit a greater society? If so, what sort of interactions take place? Having lots of physically and psychologically different races interacting and being categorised based on natural capabilities will probably have a big effect on how your world works. On a minor note, I think you mean 'Desert people' and not 'Dessert people'. A desert is this. A dessert is this. |
