| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. I'm working on a story and I'm developing it slowly. It is about a universe made by magic that also created tons of other creatures and most notably gods. I'm writing and designing it around my own made mythology that includes these gods and creatures. The world though is now controlled by an evil group of wizards and demons alike. These were made by an ancient beast of magic that was also created when the universe was formed. A group of 4 children must go to defeat the demons/wizards and take the magical items they posess in which the gods are "sealed". Places that are planned so far: - Tenor town - Giant city with many musical influences. It resembles Paris in some small ways but it is different for the rest. -Big forests (to be named) -A huge forest of temperate climate(2 magical valleys, giant tree cities) - Albom mountains - A huge mountain range. (mines) - The unending sans - A huge desert ruled by shadows -The Tomtarian archipelago - Numerous Medieval towns. -The undergrounds sanctuary (the equivalent of the heaven) -The flying hell (the equivalent of the hell) -The tarago - Huge plain ecosystems (fields of infinity) -The giant abyss - A giant ocean (Ignokuruna city) (Also I think the Tomtarian archipelago) |

We've got 4 kinds of magic in my universe. They are defined by their sort of spells but also by their influences on the environment and people. Nature Magic ~ This is one that is used the most. Numerous creatures can wield this magic but also some people. The godess of Nature and Earth : Alizomalia , protects this magic but also keeps it in balance. Nature magic is known by his plant spells and good influence on the nature around it Ancient magic ~ There is only 1 man known to wield this magic. It was the magic that created this universe. Good magic ~ It is used by a certain people to help the people in their universe and protect them from any evil forces. This magic is endangered in the last few years. Dark magic ~ The opposite of evil magic. This magic is used to kill people and destory things to cause chaos and fear under the people. |

Key question for all these fantasy type universes: Why is good, good in this universe? Why is evil necessarily evil? A lot of fantasy universes never bother to go into this they simply say light=good, evil=shadows. But why do people see them like that? |

In this context, Good=Defensive and Bad=Offensive, am I reading that right? |

But this is precisely the problem! Why is Good always Defensive/Healing? Can't Evil guys use those powers as well? It just makes it seem hollow, the setting sounds good, but please add some moral ambiguity! I might like my settings grey and miserable (just ask anyone who plays Apotheosis) but if you are going to go the usual Good vs. Evil route try and explain why morality is so polarised. I can think of very few cases of this where it makes sense other than Pan's Labyrinth, Legend and Middle Earth. |

One thing that may allow this fantasy to avoid typical tropes is by taking some tips from a fantasy series called the Bartimaeus Trilogy. They had it were the "evil" wizards were just corrupt, the demons were just enslaved, and, hell, the main characters were all flawed. Especially since you have kids being main characters, I think it may be prudent to avoid having the "white knight kid" trope. |

Well that's just my shot in the dark. I could be wrong.
I prefer a mix of light and dark. Some funny and beautiful stuff, some scary and unsettling stuff. |

A mixtures good, I think the best example is Star Wars. In that you have a clear cut case of Light versus Dark, however there are morally ambiguous characters who stand out far more than others like Han Solo. They might choose Good in the end but there are some very clear benefits to The Dark Side and there is a journey in choosing the two paths. As for humour I think it can always coexist with dark settings, Game of Thrones is incredibly dark but there are lines and scenes which do make you laugh out loud. Child protagonists on the other hand can be very hit and miss, if done well they really do help to make the story seem that bit more emotionally poignant. If done even mediocrely they are absolutely awful. For good child protagonists I recommend Ender's Game and Pan's Labyrinth. |

My idea for good/evil: -Good is based on minimum death, maximum life, natural status. This means healing magic, fertility, healing of status and whatnot. However, this meaning can be twisted into eternal tortures, growing massive populations of lethal bacteria in moments, and mind-wiping those who stand in your way. This makes Good a force for both happy, long life and oppressive dictatorships and other such things. -Evil is based on maximum death, minimum life, warped forms. This means killing spells, performing necromancy and mutating things into twisted mockeries of what they once were. However, like Good magic, Evil can be twisted around for things like destroying parasites, cancers and other diseases, keeping weeds out of crops and performing life transfusions, and growing replacement limbs or giving great bursts of strength. This makes Evil a force for chaos and destruction, but also one for advancement and recovery. Perhaps the reason that Good is rare is because a Good dictatorship was defeated recently, making people hate Good? And the Evil wizards and whatnot are just people who find Evil magic to be the magic that suits their methods best. |

The book, I haven't seen the film. Nano- Brilliant! The last idea really hooked me! I love it when that sort of thing happens. Or how about The Good Kingdom all live to be so impossibly immortal and such carefree lives that they stop noticing that they are eating all the food and are just living lives of even greater hedonism? They are so enveloped in all their good magic that they fail to notice how debauched and wrong they have become. |

Same here, we read the book in Scifi class. I too am enjoying this idea. |

Huzzah, I am success! Maybe it's only the upper classes that are able to do this, and then the army interprets 'Get more food and prostitutes' as 'Raid countryside and steal their crops and women'? And the Evil wizards were once freedom fighters, like Megatron was on Cybertron? |

Maybe not even that, maybe just the Good Wizards decided just to hole up in their little towers and spend the rest of eternity living existences of absolute bliss. Completely ignorant of the suffering around them and even when the peasants come knocking for help they had long forgotten what it was like to feel pain. They had transcended to the point of such purity that they could see nothing else. I can get quite tired of class stuff as well in fantasy, it has also been overdone. And if not done right sounds horrendously preachy. Edited by dialforthedevil, Mar 23 2014, 02:17 PM.
