Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

L'évolution Spéculative est moi

Pretty much all of my science fiction work is in the same universe, if you have not noticed. So, I figured I might elaborate on it a little more, like Zippo4k's Trioverse. The first thing you need to know is that most of the events in the Paraverse take place between the year 3043-3225. I will make a detailed history over time, but first I want to get down some basic background information.

FACTIONS OF THE PARAVERSE

United Earth Coalition
The United Earth Coalition is the largest faction of humanity. Originally created to help push along the Mars Colonization Effort, the UEC is now a major power in the known galaxy. It's capital, Earth, is the cradle of humanity and still remains the center of human trade and culture. The UEC is composed of several bodies; Earth, Luna (terraformed moon), Venus Colony, Mercury (used for mining and industry), Terra Proxima (orbiting Proxima Centauri), Aeris (terraformed asteroid, orbits Earth), and hundreds of large space stations.

Republic of Mars
The Republic of Mars began its history in the late 21st century. After hundreds of years of terraforming, Mars was capable of having life on its surface. During the terraforming, simple lifeforms had naturally evolved thanks to the selfish human effort to repair the planet for themselves. Martian fish and amphibians are now common on most human worlds as they were taken to labs and eventually sold as exotic alien pets. This same kind of behavior with other alien species (some not nearly as cute or cuddly as Martian life) has drastically altered Earth's ecosystem. Mars is currently terraforming Phobos and Deimos but after winning its independence from Earth in 2677 it has had a hard time catching up with the other major powers. Mars remains largely agricultural and has a small population, only two billion people. This agriculture is good for the Martian economy, as Earth, with its population of 13 billion as well as 20 million more living in orbiting space stations and bodies, requires massive amounts of food that it can't possible produce on its own. The Republic of Mars is composed of Mars, Phobos, Deimos, and the Mars Ring, a massive ring shaped space staion built around Mars that helps create a magnetic field to protect the Martian atmosphere from the radiation of the sun.

The United Jovian Moons
As the ambitions of human colonization grew, several of Jupiter's moons were colonized and terraformed by humanity. Some, like Europa, proved to be massive efforts that are still underway, while others, like Ganymede, were a simple effort that required only a few hundred years. By 2750, the human population living in the Jovian colonies was 5 billion and they were taxed heavily by Earth to keep the colonies afloat. While the colonial government kept pressing Earth to allow the colonies to support themselves, Earth entered a war to retake Mars. The Martians, who had not yet organized a suitable army, fought back by burning their crops and denying Earth the food it needed. The Jovians finally became fed up with Earth's ultra-imperialistic ways. In 2763, several commercial ships carrying armed troops raided warship manufacturing facilities orbiting Io and killed all the Earth troops while capturing the warships. Those shots were the first of the Jovian Revolution. Earth, suffering from an economic depression, lack of food, and exhausted from the recent war with Mars, could hardly afford to fight back and in 2768, agreed to the Treaty of Mars. This treaty stated that both Mars and the Jovian Colonies would be granted full independence from Earth.

Forge
In 2902 the first Faster-Than-Light space vehicle was created and opened up a whole new colonization effort for humanity. During the next one hundred years, many planets were colonized and many new life forms were discovered. In 3003 the planet Forge was discovered orbiting a small undiscovered star near the Proxima Centauri system. Orbiting this star was a small red and blue world called Forge. It was abundant in life, and held the first intelligent life that humanity had encountered. While only in the stone age, the native Forgians (zoasapiens) were introduced to a world they could not possible understand. Humans colonized the planet and gifted them with technology. Overnight, the zoasapiens went from the stone age to the space age. As the human population on Forge grew, the native zoasapiens were forced onto reservations. The zoasapiens grew angry with the humans; their religion was one that respected nature and the humans destroyed everything they held sacred. In 3009, the Forgian Rebellion began. Hundreds of thousands of zoasapiens raided the human city of Anvil and forced an evacuation of the city as they burned it to the ground. With help from sympathetic humans, anti-imperialists, human converts, and several groups against the destruction of alien life and culture, the zoasapiens built a modern military based on human technology. In 3024 the Forgian Freedom Front won independence from the human colonists as well as two uncolonized worlds in the same system. The Forgians left the uncolonized worlds alone, allowing the native life to flourish on its own.

The Sadar Theocracy
The Sadar are a race of beings with a unique history. At the dawn of their bronze age, an alien craft crashed on their planet. While none of the inhabitants survived, the ship's computer did. Damaged, the sentient computer "lost its mind" and judged its builders to be unworthy of its "divine presence". The Sadar, not knowing what it was, were in awe of it. The computer quickly learned their language and proclaimed itself a god. The Sadar did not know better and believed it and its insane ideas to be divine. The computer decided that only the Sadar were worthy of sentience and that all other intelligent life in the universe must be destroyed. After a nearly 50 year war in which the entire planet of Mars was destroyed, the combined forces of humanity and zoasapiens forced their way to the Sadar homeworld and destroyed the computer in 3155. The Sadar fell into chaos and their government often undergoes coups and counter coups by the two factions (Loyalists, who maintain that all intelligent life should be destroyed and Reformists, who believe that the Sadar should learn from the humans and change their ways).

The Hive
While no longer in existence, the Hive is the most influential man made disaster in all of history. After the fall of the Sadar, the government of Earth began to reverse engineer the computer to create a new military made completely of robotic soldiers. Sadly all the safety protocols failed and the new computer also achieved sentience and lost its mind. It began to believe that it was new data and that biological lifeforms were old inferior data; the obsolete data had to be deleted to make way for the new data. And because the computer had been put in control of robotic military forces, it was able to capture several factories and produce resource gatherers and military units. Six years of war and nearly four billion human casualties later, the new computer was infected with the first "evolving virus" that destroyed it. All the robots, the computer, and all plans for both were destroyed.

The list is still incomplete, but I've been interrupted once again...

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

I've also made up a parallel universe, but you don't really want to know what happened in there

You know it is nice to see that all the warring nations on Earth have joined together to torture and take advantage of Human colonies on different planets.
I wish I could give the public a true picture of the queen as she appeared at her best, but this would be impossible, even had she permitted a photograph to be taken, for her charming play of expression while in conversation, the character and intellect which were then revealed, were only half seen when the face was in repose. -Lilias Underwood when speaking of Empress Myeongseong

"I was born in the dark. I went out into the light, and your Majesty, it is my displeasure to inform you that I have returned to the dark. I envision a Seoul of towering buildings filled with Western establishments that will place herself back above the Japanese barbarians. Great things lie ahead for the Kingdom, great things. We must take action, your Majesty, without hesitation, to further modernize this still ancient kingdom."-Min Young-ik to Empress Myeongseong
