| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. There's been a huge lack of creativity in the undead department in recent years. Zombies have been "locked down", so to speak, with a specific set of characteristics across virtually every form of media. Well, I had an idea that changes that. An entirely new species, if you will, of zombie that's very different from everything that's come before. It rectifies a lot of the issues with traditional zombies, and adds a new dash of horror to our favorite shambling corpses. So, what are these "new" zombies? For starters, they're suffering from a virus that, among other things, inhibits their higher brain functions (not that this is anything new). They still need to eat and sleep, and they don't eat people unless they're really hungry. What they DO do is try to infect people- usually by projectile-vomiting on them. We'll call these guys "Pukers". However, Pukers aren't the real threat; they're just incubators for something a whole lot worse. When a Puker reaches a certain stage, its body begins to devote its available energy and nutritional stores to the development of tumor-like growths within the chest and abdominal cavities. Eventually, these growths mature into independent organisms, which emerge from the Puker's body. They're derived from human DNA, but certainly aren't human. It's these things that are the real danger; it's a zombie apocalypse where the zombies are only the first part of the life cycle of a much deadlier organism. Basically, think of the relationship between Ichneumon wasps and caterpillars- and we're the caterpillars. |

My idea came first, but to be fair, nature has seemed to perfect it. |

The Tumors are not your average "run around mindlessly and kill people" kind of monster. They're stratified into different castes; each one is specialized for a different purpose. The main caste that people see are the workers, sometimes called Grunts. They're not all that big or tough, but there's a lot of them. They'll either kill people to gather food for the whole colony, or just use a sticky mucus to pin them to the ground or a wall so Pukers can get to them. They're supported by flying Screamers, which act as scouts. They look for prey and alert the Grunts (and any Pukers in the area) to its location. If Grunts can't do the job, then the warrior caste, the Slashers, are called in. They're a lot faster and stronger than Grunts, but they spend most of their time dormant to conserve energy. There are also Shepherds, which keep an eye on the Pukers to ensure they don't get killed before they can gestate, and a couple of other castes that don't leave the colony complex. I'll post physical descriptions of the castes soon; I didn't expect this much attention.

On a semi-related note, I've come up with an explanation for vampires that's both plausible and horrifying; anyone care to hear it? |

"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!" | |

Physically, vampires vaguely resemble humans, but this is a case of mimicry; they resemble their prey in order to make hunting easier. Their limbs are longer relative to their body size than those of a human, and their muscles are adapted for quick bursts of strength, similarly to those of nonhuman apes. Their bodies are thin and flexible, allowing them to conceal themselves in surprisingly cramped spaces. Vampires' faces appear emaciated or even skeletal, with a short, flat nose and a large mouth. Vampires' eyes are highly sensitive to bright light, although it doesn't have any other effect on them. If threatened, vampires can defend themselves with both their claws and their modified incisors and canines, which are extremely sharp. Vampires, contrary to folklore, aren't blood-drinkers. Although they are carnivorous, they have no interest in actually consuming blood, as its nutritional value is negligible. However, they do have a reason to drink blood, although it has to do with reproduction, not feeding. Vampires are parasitic in nature, and use humans as a means of reproduction. Once a female becomes pregnant, she locates a suitable host, usually someone young and healthy. For weeks, she will take small amounts of blood from her target, gradually accommodating her offspring to the host's immune system. At the same time, she injects an immunosuppressant venom into the host's bloodstream, along with a highly specialized virus. Eventually, she gives birth, and the reason for her actions are revealed. Too weak to hunt on their own, young vampires get their nutrients from humans. Each night, the mother will take her offspring to their host, where they will drink their blood. The aforementioned virus causes the host's body to divert nutrients into the bloodsteam, where the young vampires can receive them. This allows the young to grow extraordinarily quickly, at the cost of the host's health. Eventually, the host wastes away, and the young vampires begin their lives as adults. |
