| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! HISTKA DESCRIPTION: Histka, more commonly known as lizardmen, are tribal reptilian race. They are humanoid, but possess heads, tails, and claws similar to those of lizards and are covered with scales. Their arms are humanlike, but their legs are digitigrade, more closely resembling those of dragons or other large reptiloids. Being reptiles, Histka hatch from eggs; for the first few months of their lives, they are quadrupedal and almost indistinguishable from lizards. Adults rarely use their vocal chords to speak, instead producing noise by using their throats and tongues to manipulate airflow. They only use their full vocal range when experiencing strong emotion, such as shrieking when scared or roaring when angered. Unlike most reptiles, they aren't technically cold-blooded; however, they are capable of changing their body temperature at will to adjust to different environments. Histka are divided into four separate breeds, each one specializing in a different environment. Riss-Histka (tree lizardfolk) are the smallest type, and have sticky pads on their hands and feet like geckos, as well as the ability to change color. Shra-Histka (desert lizardfolk) are larger but leaner, with large frills around their necks. Klar-Histka (forest lizardfolk) are the most commonly-seen of the four breeds, and typically possess green or brown scales, although other colors have been observed. Bruk-Histka (swamp lizardfolk) are heavily-built with thick scutes on their backs and powerful jaws; they are more aggressive and dangerous than other breeds. CULTURE: Due to their reclusiveness, very little is known of Histka culture. They are believed to be tribal, with the strongest and smartest individuals ruling the group. These tribes are generally matriarchal, with the dominant female making most decisions while her mate leads the tribe's warriors. Despite what many people think, Histka are actually highly intelligent, and have a deep understanding of nature-based magic. However, the aggressiveness of Bruk-Histka has lead many races to believe that all Histka are little more than beasts, viciously attacking anything they see. This has generated significant prejudice against them, further deepening their mistrust of other races. Sadly, they are regarded as little more than vermin by much of the populace. KAMI DESCRIPTION: Kami are a mysterious, arboreal race apparently native to the Eastern Lands, although small populations are found on the coastline south of Borre. Physically, Kami are similar to humanoids, but have several features that set them apart. First of all, Kami possess four arms, each one ending in three fingers. The upper pair of arms is larger than the bottom pair, and longer relative to those of humans. Their legs are digitigrade and also end in three toes, one of which forms a sort of "thumb". Kami are much leaner than humans and their bodies are much more flexible, giving them an almost serpentine appearance. Their faces are humanlike, but much more angular and lack any sort of nose, instead having a pair of nostrils. Their eyes are jet-black, lacking any whites or visible irises. Kami are hairless except for their heads and necks, which possess long, stiff, quill-like hairs. Kami come in a variety of colors, usually pale greens, browns, and greys. CULTURE: According to traders from the Eastern Lands, the Kami found in Borre are be more primitive than their relatives overseas. Western Kami live in tribes high in the treetops, building extensive networks of bridges and clusters of wooden huts. They have a great respect for nature, especially plants, especially trees, which they revere as sacred. Because of their similar beliefs and habitats, Kami are often found in the company of jungle elves, who they often trade with. Eastern Kami, on the other hand, are said to have once controlled a small empire, and constructed beautiful temples and cities during the Fourth Age. However, they fell victim to a plague that decimated their numbers, forcing the survivors to abandon their ancestral homes and seek refuge with other races. |

Well, I think you should outline your world first, the physics as well if their different. |
|
"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!" | |

The gods are just that, gods. They're incredibly powerful nigh-immortal beings. They're not native to the world, but they control it (or could if they wanted to; they made an agreement not to directly influence things after some... unpleasantness). |

COCKATRICE DESCRIPTION: Cockatrices are predatory creatures that paralyze their prey and then kill it with venom. They generally stand around as tall as a human, but there is significant variation in size between species. They are often likened to crosses between dragons and roosters, as they are reptilian and possess wings, but have a more avian head with a toothed beak and rooster-like comb. They are quite intelligent, and have been known to use their beaks to unlatch gates and break locks. Cockatrices are swift creatures, and are capable of running much faster than a human. However, their main weapon is their ability to paralyze any creature they make eye contact with, which they use to hold their prey in place while they dispatch it with their highly venomous bite. Males and females look similar, but females have smaller combs and are less brightly colored than males. BEHAVIOR: Cockatrices are usually plains-dwellers, giving them a good line of sight to spot prey and plenty of open space to pursue it. Although they rarely attack humans, they are a serious threat to livestock, and so are often killed on sight by farmers. However, cockatrice eggs are highly valued for their medicinal properties, so they are sometimes raised as egg-layers. Several breeds of nonvenomous dwarf cockatrice are popular pets due to their intelligence and harmlessness. Edited by Russwallac, Aug 13 2013, 12:11 PM.

MAGIC OVERVIEW Although many view magic as a mysterious and unknowable force, in reality it is actually fairly well-understood. The basis of all magic is mana, a form of energy that originates in the Ethereal Plane. Mana leaks into other planes, infusing them with mystic energy which can be harnessed and manipulated by living beings. Some creatures evolved or were granted the ability to use use mana for specific abilities, such as a dragon's breath or a cockatrice's gaze, but only intelligent beings can truly cast spells. The process of casting a spell involves using one's life energy, or aura, to refine the raw mana energy to create a specific effect; as a result, using spells can be physically draining on a caster's body. To combat this, many spellcasters carry gems, which can be used to store mana, reducing the amount of energy required. However, spells can also be unpredictable, and failure to cast them properly can backfire spectacularly and lethally. Some forms of magic, such as arcane magic, use words and symbols to help focus spells and reduce the chance of this. In addition to being used for spells, mana can also build up in certain locations, where it often takes on aspects of a certain form of magic. For example, in Shadowmoor, there is a large amount of necromantic energy, which tends to mean that corpses rarely stay dead for long. Such buildup can also create elementals; large numbers of elementals is a sure sign of a large amount of ambient magical energy. |

HISTKA DESCRIPTION: Fairies are an ancient and mysterious otherworldly race. They are small, typically standing roughly as tall as a child's knee. They closely resemble humans, but are slimmer and possess insect-like wings. Their legs are digitigrade, ending in delicate, three-toed feet. Their foreheads are swept up into a pair of sensitive antennae, and their eyes are large and very dark. Their skin possesses an iridescent sheen and luminescent markings that glow in darkness. Fairies are extremely long-lived, and children have never been seen, leading some scholars to theorize that they are immortal. CULTURE: Very little is known of fairy culture, or even what their race's actual name is. They are powerful magic users, creating hidden groves that are impossible for non-fairies to discover Although they are usually depicted as beautiful, benevolent creatures in stories, fairies are actually fairly cold and uncaring towards other races, and have been known to abduct them for use as slaves. They have a rigid caste system, and those who break it have their wings amputated and are abandoned in the Material Plane. Such individuals tend to go insane, becoming even more dangerous to mortals than their winged kin. |
