Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Why Can't I Hold All These Mongols?

I'm only really proficient in English. I used to be somewhat bilingual, or at least converse well in Friulan when I was younger, but I've mostly lost the ability to do so by now. Friulan (yes, it is spelt that way) is a minority language in North-East Italy for those on the site that don't know.

Mind you, I do aim to learn, and become fluent in another language, I'm just as yet unsure of which one. I've been thinking Mandarin, Japanese or Russian, and I've done so much reading and research into all of them by now, and I'm too interested in them all that no matter which one I pick, I'd regret not picking one of the other two.

Although, I think the most likely thing is that I'll just pick up Friulan again.

I speak proficient English and decent Spanish. Used to be good at French, but having never needed to use it and me dumping French classes led to me completely forgetting the lovely language.
I plan to learn Portuguese and Italian before I am twenty.

You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!"

I'm fluent in American English, British English, Canadian, and Australian, though I'm not very good with the accents. In August, my family is moving to France for a year because of my dad's sabbatical, so I'll know French by the end of the year. Can't say I do now, though :r

From what I hear, it gets easier with each language learned. I'd recommend picking up Friulian again, since much of what you know is probably not entirely forgotten, and once you've got that moving on to something bigger, like French or Italian. I'd recommend French, if you know English and French, you can probably manage in any country in the world.

Russia isn't dying, and neither is Russian. Things went to shit in the 90's but now their doing extremely well. It's certainly more vibrant than Esperanto.

I was utterly abysmal at GCSE French, I've picked up more German by absorption than I ever did while being taught French. I'd like to learn German properly some day, could be useful.

Probably.

I took two years of French in high school. One of the worst classes I've ever taken.

In fact, russia is dying.
The putin government hasnt changed anything.
Russia dies, just like the usa. The countries of the future are arabia, japan, china and the other east asian states.
A german author once compared the states to their scyscrapers: in the 19th century the highest buildings were in europe, then in the usa and ussr. And now? Burj khalifa, taipei 101.

Who gives a shit? (apart, from, of course, the Russians)

Are you genuine? Or are you trying to provoke a response?

Russia's economic growth is comparable to China's, unemployment is falling, HDI is rising, local corruption is decreasing, it maintains the second most powerful military in the world and it has enormous reserves of near enough everything. It is increasing ties with the EU and former Soviet states and is undergoing a similar process to the USA in the 1950s in terms of sourcing work in other countries. And yet it has managed to keep its growth out of the news, which is a PR success. Yes, there is major political corruption and there is rising depression in its youth, but that doesn't mean that the country isn't one of the top three to watch for the next century.

If you were alive in the 1980s, with the rise of Japanese and Korean electronics industries, you would have seen similar predictions to those about China today; they will become the world's top two economies etc. Yet the bubble burst and they remain world-class, but have not overtaken the USA. Given the increasing integration of economies rising amongst the most economically powerful nations is harder than ever. Of course this doesn't mean China will fail to overtake the USA's GDP, but it's a reminder not to take things too far.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.
