| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! It's midwinter in Hiberna's northern hemisphere. A thick layer of snow and ice covers the ground, concealing the frozen dirt. However, despite the apparently barren nature of this wasteland, there is movement. A herd of windshears, enormous, armored herbivores, are marching across the plains. They are bulky animals, supported by six sturdy legs and covered in a thick layer of flattened, feather-like fur. Their front ends are almost entirely encased in thick, bony shields; behind these, a set of smaller limbs work furiously, digging through the snow to reach the ground beneath and unearth the clam-like plants windshears feed on. Despite their appearance, the windshears head-plates aren't a defense against predators; rather, they protect the windshears from the powerful storms that blast through Hiberna's thick atmosphere. One such storm is fast approaching, and the windshears pause to hunker down and wait it out. However, the storm isn't the only danger. Riding its winds are predators known as snow-sailers. They look something like boats, possessing a pair of large sails on their backs that angle themselves to catch the wind. Hiberna's long winters and extreme cold means that food can be scarce; sailing across the snow on is an energy-efficient way of travel. Snow-sailers are perfectly adapted to it, gliding silently on their smooth, armored undersides. As they approach the herd of windshears, the snow-sailers begin to show signs of activity. When traveling, they sleep to conserve energy, but the smell of prey has awoken them. Suddenly, one of them flips onto its back, extending clawed legs from within its fur; for in reality, their "backs" are actually their undersides. The plates that they glide along on are actually on their backs! The rest of the back right themselves as well, scurrying towards their quarry. Selecting a smaller, windshear, they climb onto its back, squeezing into the narrow space between the massive animal's shield and its neck, where its fur is shortest. Then, simultaneously, the pack bites down, releasing a spray of dark blood. The windshear bellows in pain, alerting its herdmates, but it's too late. The snow-sailers back off, waiting until their victim has bled to death before feasting. They will gorge themselves with enough food to sustain them until summer, when they will shed their sails and slough off the outer layer of their skids, revealing segmented plates beneath. With their newfound flexibility, they will be able to hunt in a more conventional method. For now, however, they are the frozen plains' silent killers. |

I really enjoy this... I know the last post was in March but are you going to add more. Or was this intended for other people to add their own planets as well? |
