| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. After I ran way crying trying to start my own RP in the same vein as the Cultural Evolution game I decided to get back to it with a fantastic piece. I want to include a variety of species and cultures and both keep it simple and not clichéd. Here is the map. Spoiler: click to toggle Currently the big Northernmost island is inhabited by Dwarves, who rule, the Finns, who enforce that rule and the Saami, who get seven shades of shit kicked out of them whenever they complain about being at the bottom of the pile. The big green island is inhabited by Elves. I'm not sure what to do with them, arrogant racists and arrogant perfect hippies have been done. I'll probably make them live only 200 or so years, and incapable of hybridizing with humans, or at least not producing very many fertile hybrids. The yellow islands are inhabited by Dragons, who are intelligent but rather possessive and straight forward, which can make them seem child-like. They also live with humans and act as their nobility, defending them in exchange for the humans doing all the things dragons can't. It's got a reputation as a place the oppressed can flee if they are desperate and willing to work. The dragon's don't care about your ideology or religion as long as they get their sheep tithe. On the "mainland" are the Human kingdoms. Once most of the island was united under an empire, the empire started to crumble under barbarian attacks, poor harvests, a bad economy and religious strife. The last Emperor decided that to turn things around he would conquer the dragon kingdom, plunder their gold and then use the dragons as soldiers to help restore his empire. The expedition was destroyed and the capital was razed. With no emperor, no capital and hardly any army left the empire collapsed in less than a decade. One province did manage to survive, mostly thanks to the corrupt governor having skimmed enough money to pay the local barbarians to fight for him rather than sack the place, and when the dust settled he found himself the most powerful and wealthy man left standing so just declared himself Emperor. That's the purple nation. Edited by lamna, Sep 18 2012, 12:43 PM.

Pirates steal, they murder, they rape and they are slavers. They are hostis humani generis. |

Fakey, I know it must be hard to understand, but not everybody thinks putting a criminal on a boat makes them cool. And saying "NO YOUR THE STUPID ONE!" is not very convincing. Why would a robot be a pirate anyway? Besides, I had Vikings conquer elves in the back story. Who fled after a rebellion and now live with dragons. Isn't that enough? Psssh. Why else would a robot be a pirate? To steal metals and stones in order to power themselves. |

Fantasy RPs are always welcome xD The dragon race is my favorite so far. How large are they compared to humans, and how advanced are their technology? Oh and how about vampires? You could say its a genetic defect or a parasite ( think malaria ) that purges the system of iron, making the victim crave blood. Or just a bunch of slightly eccentric people who file their teeth into points for religious and happen to like the taste of blood... |

Screw that; you should go with the original vampire legends: Hideous, undead monstrousities that can shapeshift, control people's minds, and are nigh-impossible to kill. (Seriously, you had to behead them, remove their heart, chop it up, and burn it.) |

I'm not sure how big the dragons would be. I'd like to have them as big as Temeraire, but I don't know if those islands would be able to sustain a population of thousands of dragons. Spoiler: click to toggle The dragons are a bit too big to manage much technology of their own. Their humans can manage most of what people could in the tenth century. I don't really care much for either vampires, I prefer stuff that needs magic to come into being but otherwise sustains itself, not strange things like that. |

What about the dragons being like the ones in DragonHeart? Wise and powerful yet few in number? |

Or you could have both "animalistic" dragons and intelligent ones. That's what I have; there are dozens of species of normal dragons and a race of intelligent Elder Dragons. |

Or Kilgharrah in Merlin. Only two weeks left until series 5! But no. I want my dragons to be people. Some will be wise and and intelligent, but as flawed as the rest of us. There will be dragons who are kind overlords who help their vassals and try to improve their society, and there will be stupid, greedy ones who just hide in their caves and steal other dragons humans and eat them like savages. My dragons will be wise in some ways, they don't have much in the way of bigotry or sexism. There are non-Dragons who are under their protection, those that aren't and non-dragons that are enemies. They are usually very straightforward and not very subtle. Dragons have two types of enemies, those that have been appropriately dealt with and those still breathing. I want my world to be a real and dynamic place. Worlds of legend are fun, but I want this to very human, for want of a better word. More A Song of Ice and Fire than Lord of the Rings, more Legand of Galactic Heros than Star Wars. As for intelligence, there will be a curve rather than a sharp distinction. The closest thing the dragons have to nobility will be among the most intelligent being in the world, while the small dragons scraping a living on the fringes are very dim. |

What kind of dragon are you aiming for. I guess by the image that you are going for Western Dragons, with wings and so and forth. Can they breath fire? If they have wings, how well can they fly? Are they natural/adept magic users? |

"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!" | |

I think it would be awesome to have humans living under the noble houses of dragons. Kinda like Game of Thrones but instead of the Starks you have a huge dragon lord and their wyrm brood. The dragon leads its bannermen into battle, all dragons answering to an elder dragon council? |

The Dragons of Temeraire are my inspiration, not sure about fire breathing yet though. I think they might all get it.
Nothing so formal as that. There is the King, and when the King dies everyone who wants to be king goes to the capital, and everyone else who cares sends a human to be their proxy. Feeding two thousand massive predatory reptiles in one area for weeks would be impractical, and most dragons hate leaving their people and treasure behind. There they have a moot/parliament/thing to decided who'll be the next King. Sometimes they argue, sometimes they vote, and sometimes it comes down to a fight. They elect a new King and it's business as usual until he/she dies. Below the King everyone is theoretically equal, though the King will often appoint trusted dragon to keep an eye on a region, and some dragons are richer and more powerful than others. This is a very anarchic state, doing little more than organising a common defence and preventing squabbling. There is no dragon council, the Dragon King is very much pre-Magna Carta king. The clever ones create human councils to help administrate things, or co-opt existing ones. |

I know a little bit unrealistic, but an even more awesome idea would be a massive fight between the dragons over the skies of the capital for who gets control. Maybe not to the death (although that could happen) but still does nobody else see the potential crazyawesome! |
