I have recently been seen a lot of alien invasion/visitation films and the new season of falling skies and I have wonder why would ET really invade Earth for? I'm not wondering how will they get her, and what tactics would they use (since theirs already a threat about that), but for what would they invade Earth?

Resources, knowledge, slaves.

Here’s a good question to help this, why did Columbus cross the Atlantic? I would imagine the reasons would be similar in both instances.

They could find natural resources easily elsewhere. Unless they considered organic life as a resource?

Columbus crossed the Atlantic because he though the earth was much smaller than everyone knew it was. He lucked out and their happened to be a continent where he thought Indonesia would be.

The universe is really, really big. You know how big you think it is? Its way bigger.

Any aliens advanced enough to get to earth won't need slaves or resources and certainly not knowledge from us. If aliens invade it will be for ideological reasons, not practical ones.

Perhaps they want to convert us to their religion, or unify us and uplift us from or savage ways. Or perhaps they don't like the idea of intelligent life other than themselves and are here to exterminate us or prevent us ever becoming to advanced.

But they aren't coming for our water.

I'm going to beat Fakey to this.

What about an intergalactic zoo? Capture earth specimens and keep them for study. Advanced or not, they're bound to get curious.

What if they are like the combine? The Combine empire expands by invading worlds and exploiting their dominant species as it sees fit. The Combine manipulates species through a variety of means, including bioengineering and artificial implantation. The products of the Combine's re-engineering process are known as "synths," bio-mechanical organisms that serve a variety of functions within the empire. The Combine also uses their technology to create armies of super-soldiers, uniquely adapted for the particular environments of the conquered worlds. This process results in a highly mobile and adaptive military force which is able to respond to any threat and crush any opposition.

It wouldn't be for water or minerals since the universe has plenty of that.

Colonization would be the reason. The aliens could have destroyed their home planet through war or pollution and global warming and need a new place to live.

These are good reasons too.

Somewhat plausible, but I'd aim for a planet without a civilization in my way if I could.

I cannot think of a single decent reason to invade, assuming they have even an ounce of individuality and respect like we do I would expect there to be quite a political squabble if it was even suggested. A business or organization is far more likely than an actual nation-equivalent, which when I think about it that is what powered our colonizing a lot of the time wasn't it, to start an invasion or even interaction of any sort.

Once that is established you can give them any reason you want, they're a collection of like minded individuals with a particular goal regardless of how sound or crazy it is.

They're all punks or goffs or preps and they want to kill all posers.

That, or they are curious and/or desire to either convert us or destroy us based on their moral codes.

Colonization could be a possibility, also, it could be for resources.

We've already been over resources. Anything we have on Earth, there's probably several times more in an asteroid, comet, or other planet.

They might want to destroy any potential competition before it becomes an issue. After all, aliens might infer we're a dangerous species after seeing what we've done to our biosphere.

I don't like that we think what we've done to our biosphere would be threatening to an alien race, as if they didn't do the same or even worse, and considering they would have the means of traveling here I would expect them to have the means of designing and building mechanical whatsits that can convert atmospheres over the course of a decade or three.

Presumably, aliens would invade Earth for roughly the same reasons Europeans invaded the New World. Greed could play a big part, as could a need for colonization.

But then they'd have a short term competition with us, which is not worth the effort when they can simply mine our moon for the same materials, or even just use some uninhabited rock.
