Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

AN: Magic: The Gathering fanfic. I give the middle finger to all you preps and posers.

Sasha was nervous. Even the calm, welcoming light of the Selesnya did not dispell the sense of dread - if anything, it worsened it.

"Is there something troubling you, sister?" said a dryad, with a smile as warm as the Sun.

Sasha looked around. All the elves, dryads, wolf mounts, wurms, elementals, loxodon and other seeds of the Sun-Tree were looking at her, trying to be as welcome and conforting as possible. Finally, courage settled in, and she took a deep breath.

"I want to learn about the ways of the Selesnya."

"That is wonderful sister. Blessed be the winds that brought you to us."

"Welcome aboard!" a preppy plant elemental with white flower eyes said while patting Sasha's back.

"Yeah, I have some questions."

"As many wise ones said, ask away!"

"Well, is it true you want to revert Ravnica to it's original state?"

"Indeed. We believe Ravnica has "progressed" in a very decadent and unnatural way. Just look at the poor Gruul, once proud scions of the wild, now forced to scrap for a living, and having given up their domain to those pestilent Simic and Golgari. Once we can, we will nature reclaim what it lost, but our current focus is to make everyone peaceful and harmonic, even if such a task is slow when nature is in a state like this."

"So, if all progress is leading Ravnica to decay, what about those technologies that improve every day life?"

"As attractive as they can be, yes, they are immoral. They might seem to improve life, but at the end of the day, they're just decoys from enlightment. I mean, think about it: technology, as conforting as it tries to be, only makes creates problems that didn't exist. Have you ever heard of muscle memory? For example, a loxodon might know how to move his arms in slow, graceful stances to let his life energy flow and heal his limbs. But then, he starts to analyse his movements, and he stops doing it right. He tries to see if his movements are perfect, but the more he tries, the more he forgets on how to do them naturally. Same with technology. Owl folk fly, but sometimes they forget how to fly when they use too many levitating artifacts."

"Okay, but technology had to start somewhere. At some point, there were problems people simply couldn't solve."

For a moment, Sasha was afraid she had been too brash, but the dryad simply smiled warmly.

"Trust me, there simply aren't such problems. People simply thought there were things they couldn't do, and thus they simply tried to make up false solutions."

"But isn't progress natural? Isn't the will to improve things part of our natural instincts? And speaking of which, what is the defenition of "natural"? I mean, aren't technically all things part of nature? And aren't the Golgari, the Simic and the Gruul also trying to do things naturally? I mean, they are also trying to bring Ravnica how it once was, but they aren't as peaceful or as ascetic as Selesnya, and they indeed represent quite obvious and undeniable aspects of nature. I'm sorry if I'm being offensive."

"It's okay" the plant elemental said sympathetically.

"Don't sweat it, nobody here thinks you were being offensive on purpose. It's a very common question, in fact. Indeed, people often wonder why our way is the most natural when other guilds also claim to be doing things naturally. The answer is not simply that they are deluded, for we are not prideful, but that they forget that there such a thing named corruption. Indeed, the Gruul, the Golgari and the Simic all embody things that are seemingly natural, but they forget that nature wasn't always like that. For example, the Gruul and the Golgari quite literally think of nothing in regards to sex, but they forget that it has a purpose, to allow propagation and to unite couples. That it brings pleasure is a superficial trait that they forget was meant to be a bonus, not a major aspect."

"What about all the animal species that are promiscuous? Did they forget it was just a bonus too?"

The wolf mounts began to whistle nervously.

"Well, that they engage in such debauchery is a sign of corruption. Besides, we should not use animals as examples."

"But isn't our whole point to base our morality in nature? Besides, why is brainwashing acceptable when it is clearly not natural?"

At that point, the dryad thought it was best to begin the mind changing choir.
