Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I'm going back to basics.

After thousands of years of development, Humanity had conquered the greatest frontier that we know the existence of:
Time itself.
There was a great intergalactic empire, coexisting with the few sapients that had also reached Mankind's development (the Bewk, the Solstelek and the Urahob, mainly, with the Irkaputh and others being less advanced.). FTL-travel was like riding a bus, and intergalactic travel was like an aeroplane. Time travel had already been used to create alternate timelines, although travelling between was only for either the super-rich or those with interest in whatever lived there. Numerous planets, including one seeded with copepods, and another seeded with numerous creatures such as frogfish and mantis shrimp, had been tempororamising (with the root words meaning 'time branch'). Now, though, the finest technology was going to enable a creature of Earth to look into its planet's path, without changing a thing. Keeping the exact same timeline.
Of course, something went wrong.
And possibly the greatest alternate world of all was born. This world was known as Jurassicodiremptus to Science. To everyone else, though...
This alternate world was named the Jurassic Split.

"Something's gone wrong, sir!" a Bewk called to the Human captain of the small, TARDIS-like machine that had brought them here. "The Void Field... It's gone offline!"
"WHAT!?" the captain called in outrage.
"And sir!" another Human called. "There's a massive meteor heading-"
It was cut off by a gigantic crashing noise, as said meteor ploughed into them, many times faster than a bullet. Travelling through time was much more straining than being hit by a giant rock, though. The main problem...
Below them, the Jurassic world was unaware of impending doom for its greatest species. A camera zoomed in to Northern Gondwana. A herd of sauropods were migrating, with thousands of babies tottering along behind them. Every person on the ship watched as they were there one moment and gone the next.
And then the camera zoomed out, revealing the destruction that had been caused by a simple technological fault. There was a great silence as every member of the crew stood still in rememberance of the once-there world A single Urahob whispered, "Wind-Blower, have mercy on us...."
Then the captain stood up.
"This is a journey of discovery," he announced to the crew. "No matter what happens, we must not forget that. If we were to leave this place now, it would never be discovered again. For every billion lives lost in this catastropy, trillions more shall be born! Those creatures never died in our timeline, and the creatures to come never existed in ours! So, I declare a vote! Whether we explore the future of this new, alternate world, or whether we lose it forever!"
The crew began to cheer. "Explore!" someone called out. The single shout came out in droves, and became a chant of the most important word that these people had ever said. "Explore! Explore! Explore!"
"So we SHALL explore!" the captain called out. "We shall explore the forests, we shall explore the beaches, we shall explore the depths of the sea, and the highest mountain! We shall see whatever comes out of this world, and when we can no longer continue, others shall follow in our footsteps! We shall explore this alternate planet, and all that comes out of it!"

And as new chances were born in the destruction below, the heavens cradled an exploration team that would never look back.
