Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

The planet Venus will transit the Sun between 22:09 UTC on June 5 and and 04:49 UTC on June 6. Read more about it here.

The transit will be visible in the United States and Canada, Europe (including the UK) as well as in Aus and New Zealand (a heads up to our Australian members! From where you are, the entire transit will be visible).

Remember to view the transit safely (methods of viewing the transit can be seen here). Looking directly at the Sun with your eyes unshielded can cause permanent damage!

And remember, the next transit occurs in December 2117, which is about one hundred and five years in the future!

:D

I like looking at the sun though. It's so bright and beautiful...
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

...I have to look away?

I didn't think one of these would be happening while I was alive.

UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time and is synonymous with the time in Greenwich, England.

You can use this converter to convert UTC times into your local time.

One occured 8 years ago back in '04. I assume you weren't alive back then?

The sun has gone down. Oh well, I missed it. Once in a lifetime, maybe, but hardly interesting. Now the lunar eclipse, that was cool to watch.

Why Can't I Hold All These Mongols?

We had an 'excursion' to an area of clear skies to watch it for about half an hour.
Pretty intense. it was really only me and a couple of other astronomy nerds getting in a van with a science teacher to go see it, because the clouds obscured it from inner-west Sydney.
