| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. District 9 was created for $30 million, Avatar for $237 million. What percentage of those budgets was taken up by CGI work is another question entirely... |

As said before big budget doesn't necessarily mean the CGI will be any good, look at the film Monsters for instance. Meanwhile Van Helsing has some pretty god-awful effects. |

Speaking of D9, I saw the movie yesterday for the first time. I loved it, and can't wait for the sequel. I loved the alien design, probably one of the first films to truly stray away from a humanoid design. One thing I noticed is that the prawns occasionally walk on all fours, abandoning their humanoid appearance. The CGI of the aliens is really well done and I could've sworn the aliens were real. And really? Avatar was almost pure CGI? Wow, that shows just how much effort Cameron put into the film. I'm also patiently awaiting the sequel. |

Some of the effects in the Monsters trailer looked iffy to me. The other effects in the Monsters trailer look unintelligible to me (since it's so gloomy). I suppose you can have big budget and still have bad effects, but in that case I feel really sorry for you (because the people doing your effects for you must be either blitheringly incompetent or conning you out of your money). At the low-budget end of the scale you're just not going to get the in-house software tools and massive render farms that more money can afford. And at the 'no-budget' level, you're stuck lacking even the basic skills to ensure something watchable. Case in point: Birdemic. Edited by T.Neo, Jun 10 2012, 05:39 PM.

No I think what needs to happen is that the CGI teams need to be motivated. For Jurassic Park they said in interviews that they were trying to beat the legend Stan Winston. Meanwhile in Prometheus most of them were die had Ridley fans who wanted to recapture the greatness of the original alien films in CGI. The Lord of the Rings team as well were all Tolkien fans who wanted so badly to see his world for how they imagined. etc. |

Monsters is great and it was made by about 12 people, though a lot of it is very dark. It's kind of the point. I never knew their were Mayan(?) ruins on the US-Mexico border though. Edited by lamna, Jun 10 2012, 05:56 PM.

D4D, if your theory is correct, you should be able to produce high quality CGI using your own meagre skills, Blender, and your home PC. Good luck.
I could also excuse Birdemic for being awful, and say that it's "kind of the point". |

Something something about using what you have to it's best effect, hiding the monster, Jaws, Alien. I'm going to sleep. |

Well, you have't seen the whole of Monsters. Or the making of. Many of the props in that films are CGI. Most of the signs are, and I never noticed until I watched the special features. |

Never got why Transformers sold better than these.
And some nose-spiked Iguanodon.

Or they could despise you. Or not feel inspired. As for your comment on having nothing but cheap animation, I show you this. And then you realize that even if this has smooth animation, this is stop motion. Which proves you wrong Neo. It is possible to make non-jerky, completely fluid stop-motion.
Bitch please. There is never enough tropes. Why, just ask my good friend Candle Jack. I'm sure you two wou Edited by Kamidio, Jun 11 2012, 12:45 AM.

Except that is fairly obviously stop-motion; it's noticeably jerky. (Except for some of the facial expressions, which are animations, not stop-motion.)

Actually, it is jerky on purpose in some places, but in others, such as where Pyro shakes its head, it becomes noticeably smooth. Also, those aren't animations. They have to take all those pictures to get it to work. Edited by Kamidio, Jun 11 2012, 09:13 AM.

(Which is easy, as it's a computer. You just have it take a whole lot of screenshots over a very short period of time. You can't really do this in the real world.) |
