Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

The jerkiness of stop-motion is part of the process. It's inevitable, due to the way things are done. GoMotion techniques attempt to mitigate it slightly by performing such tasks as vibrating the model or smearing the lens with vaseline to provide motion blur.

I suppose you could perform some sort of method within a computer program to tweak stop-motion footage.

For me, at least, the value of stop motion work lies in its Stylistic Suck; it has a nostalgic charm. Modern CGI can be almost totally (if not totally) photorealistic, can have far more realistic movement, and is more adaptable from a filmmaking standpoint. That said, stop motion does have one advantage over bad or cheap CGI- the rendering engine is free, and those are real photons being emitted from a real light source and reflecting off of real surfaces into a real camera...

Which links back nicely into the topic as that's originally what Jurassic Park was going to be.

I saw some of the early stop-motion raptor tests; they were AMAZING.

Although the CGI in Jurassic Park was absolutely fantastic, most modern animation just seems to be cheap and tacky. Jurassic Park looks great as they have put real effort into it.

Iamna- You are right about Skyrim, I remember seeing that first herd of mammoths it was awesome!

And then the (seemingly harmless) giant sent me flying towards the moons. "Peaceful unless provoked" my tail.

Back on topic, it seems to me that movies with really bad CGI aren't due to a lack of budget; you can see that the CGI in films like "Monsters" and many short films is actually very good. It's really more due to the fact that the animators were lazy and didn't bother to make their creations look at all realistic.

I was watching some crappy "Dinocroc vs. Supergator" a couple days ago... No better example of lazy animators.

Flish, go watch the ending to Megaladon. Do it now.

It's the kind of movie where, for a syfy movie, they did decent special effects. Not good, not bad. This lasts until the end where the budget either plummeted or they all decided at once they were bored and didn't care anymore.

Its everything I love about Syfy movies.

Going by what I've seen of pure CGI movies, they seem to do better in the animation department than their live action + CGI counterparts; of the ones I've seen with the latter, I can count more that do poorly in the animation department than I can ones which succeeded, even if the model itself is well designed. Although as an aspiring CG animator, the commentary about live-action mixed with CGI shouldn't be taken as a rag on CGI + Live action. Most of the shows/movies I've seen that had poorly done animation also had shallow stories and acting to go with them.

As with everything, the outcome of CGI correlates to the amount of time and effort (and money) that goes into it. Cheap/rushed/careless/clueless CGI is bad.

But good CGI these days is fantastic.

Case in point: Avatar! I challenge anyone to find the difference between real life and CGI in that film.

Easy: anything that doesn't look like a ridiculous video game animal on steroids is real.

Actually, nothing in the movie was real except for the people and some parts of the sets. Everything else, the vehicles, the creatures, the planet itself; was CGI.

(Also, is there ANY movie that you actually like? You just spend your time insulting them.)

Actually I would say the CGI for District 9 was pretty good. And Prometheus was simply stunning.

District 9 did have excellent CGI. I haven't seen Prometheus yet, but it also looks good.
