| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Why Can't I Hold All These Mongols?

Fakey, but I don't want role models. And if I did I would prefer them to have some semblance of reality, instead of a caricature of morality and family ideals. Complex characters are simply more enjoyable to read about than a two dimensional godlike being who can do no wrong. Crime and Punishment would be a shit book if it was Model Citizen and Reward. Game of thrones would be worth as much as my piss if it was about moral, upstanding, incorruptible people who do no wrong, make no mistakes and who have no normal human behaviors such as lust, power-hunger and narcissism. Imagine what All Quiet on the Western front, the Brother's Karamazov, Othello, the Red badge of courage, the Great Gatsby, Animal Farm, 1984, The Fountainhead, Jude the Obscure, The Road, Paradise Lost (mainly Satan), The Stranger, The Spark of Life, the Black Obelisk, The Painted Bird, The Heart of Darkness and Watchmen (to name a few) would have been like if they hadn't had complex, inherently flawed and realistic characters, what would they have been? Complete and utter piss. |

Two flaws in your argument. One: I said the DC heroes have to balance a public image of incorruptibility with the fact that they are corruptible. This means they have to work harder than the average Marvel hero. Two: I've only read Animal Farm out of all those books. The rest I refuse to read because they'd be boring as fuck if I read them. We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

Fakey, I honestly can't care about the characters in half of the DC comics I've read. You might be able to. But I can't, liking corrupted or flawed characters isn't idiotic or stupid or boring or anything. It's goddam taste, you like to read about godlike beings kicking ass, and I like to read about people who will bleed like the guy next door, and have personality flaws, but still manage to sometimes kick ass. It's just taste. I can't care about some pure paragon, morally committed, godlike being in tights. It just isn't going to happen. |

Or you can go for the Dial approach and instantly dislike anything which is remotely magical (yes Harry Potter is crap). But thats just my taste for me I love superheroes like Ironman and Batman. They kinda remind me a bit of the Great Gatsby if he had superpowers. |

Would Green Lantern fall into the Harry Potter category or the Iron Man category? It's sci-fi, but there's no way in hell all lights in the colour spectrum are symbolic of emotions and powered by them, and have weird animals associated with them. |

Don't you know anything about the light spectrum? Magic doesn't bother me so much, but I do prefer it when it works like Game of Thrones (where the magic is peripheral to the story and very elusive) or American Gods (where the magic is believable, it's hard to explain if you haven't read it), Harry Potter wasn't bad, however some things were kind of absent (like what was the rest of the world doing/thinking about Voldemort? Did wizards recognize or have any say/influence in non-magical affairs, what were they doing in Hogwarts during World War 2 or the Cold War, or World War 1 or the Napoleonic wars?). It bothers me more when characters do extraordinary things and show no signs of stress or trauma, or psychological alienation. I mean superman would have severe PTSD several times over. |

One could always go the lamna route and not really care all that much about superheros at all. Even the "realistic" ones like Ironman and Batman don't really grab my attention. It's a matter of taste, and one man trying to maintain the status quo by punching people in disguise isn't something I can care that much about, wither he's a godlike alien or some traumatised kid trying to hold it all together. |

Green Latern would be there with Harry Potter as he wears a stupid costume and yes the whole lights and emotions. I loved the Avengers but I hated Thor. Game of Thrones is perfect as I like how magic is very off limits and has very strict rules to it and really isn't pretty. You would think Voldemort would have worked out that a nice ol' 50cal. would sort those snotty bastards out in 5 seconds flat. |

This comment is invlaid because you said post-traumatic stress disorder. I refuse to call it that hellish, emotion less name. It is inhumane, and soliders would be getting treatment quicker if we still called it Shellshock. And Superman is a goddamned alien. His brain can't get Shellshock. I think we should be teaming up on Son Goku. Even Superman doesn't die and then COME BACK.
You hate anything that doesn't promote the military heroes, Lamna.
Actually, emotions are connected with certain colors because they actually do something. It's just that DC failed to do the research, so now whenever I see a Red Lantern and Harbinger of Rage, I think about food. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/JustForFun/CandleJack?from=Main.CandleJack And I can't believe no one else here cares about Candle Jack, I mean the guy is totally awes Edited by Kamidio, Jun 2 2012, 10:19 AM.
