Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I'm working on a story set in an alternate present where the Axis powers won WWII. I was inspired by the TV series "Fringe" and, later, the recent novel by Stephen King, "11/22/63." Like "The Man in the High Castle"-a novel I did not read-by Philip K. Dick, the attempted assassination of FDR is successful in this timeline and this leads to a chain of events that leads to a loss for the allies.

Unlike in "High Castle," America isn't conquered. But things aren't pretty. Economic, technological and social progress is decades behind and social and economic mobility is practically nonexistent.

I have so far:

-Alaska is a sovereign nation, officially known as the Republic of Alaska, where Slavic refugees have found a semblance of sanctuary against Nazi extermination pogroms

-Hawaii is under imperial Japanese domination as is Australia and New Zealand and just about the entire Pacific and southeastern Asia

-Several northern and eastern counties in Maine are now part of Canada

-Royal siblings, Elizabeth and Margaret, managed to escape to Canada during the German invasion of Britain but their parents weren't so lucky; their mother was raped to death as their father watched and he was then later brutally tortured and executed

-Skinheads are a common sight in many cities in the U.S. and segregation is still a bitter reality throughout the South

-For several decades now, the southern border states are in continuous warfare with German-backed Mexico trying to reclaim land taken by the U.S. back in the Mexican-American war

-The atomic bomb was never invented due to short-sighted Nazi exterminations of Jewish and Slavic scientists but allies-turned-rivals, Germany and Japan, race to unlock the secrets of the atom in present day

-The Nazi conquest of the Middle East led to America finding alternative means of energy and turned its sights on renewable power; efficient solar panels and tidal and wind turbines power American cities and transportation

-The Hindenburg disaster never happened

Go nuts. I love Paul Verhoeven flicks because speculates the most outrageous and daring things. The amusing and innovative details in "Robocop" and "Total Recall" and "Starship Troopers" and "Hollow Man" makes his films so enjoyable and memorable. That's what I'm going for here.

Why Can't I Hold All These Mongols?

It depends, if the Nazis cut ties with the Japanese or formed a treaty with the US then they may have avoided conflict with the US.

As I said before a Republican President in at the time would be far more likely to not invade due to their isolationist policies at the time.

The only plces where Hitler was successful in conquering are countries with a large germanic population, where his talk about Lebensraum actually meant something.

There was a history channel show called alternative history, and the first (and only so far) episode was about if the Nazis won WW2. It might be of some help.

Even before Pearl Harbor the USN was 'accidentally' firing on German ships and U-boats were sinking America shipping.

As light as American history is on the Indian Wars I hope you're familiar with them.
For some reason no one ever mentions how many times the US attacked Canada, there was a sizible force in the northern US just to keep the Canadians from invading.
The anarchists? They killed the president, sort of worth noting.

I'm well are of the Indian Wars but I don't know why you're bringing them up.

Weren't the unsuccessful Fenian Raids-if that is what you are referring to-after the Civil War?

You're mixed up. It was later in the century when anarchists were a problem hence McKinley's assassination in 1901. Lincoln was killed by a southern sympathizing conspirators and Garfield by a mentally deranged, bitter office seeker.

I'm confuzled as to how they would win, Hitler didn't have the mentality to successfully take over a desert let alone Britain.

One way is that the Battle of Stalingrad could have happened months earlier so the Russian winter couldn't have devastated Hitler's forces.

Fighting Russia is like pissing in the wind, no matter how much you throw it won't go very very far.

Well there was the first time the Americans invaded during the war of independence, then again in the war of 1812. Then during the Rebellions of 1837 the USA did nothing as the rebels used the USA as a base and thousands of Americans joined the rebels, then there was the thankfully bloodless unpleasantness in 1858-59 over British Colombia. Then there were the Fenian raids, where Irish Americans raided Canada and America did nothing to stop them, and America demanding the annexation of Canada as reperations for allowing the CSS Alabama to be built, though eventually they settled for cash.

Russia isn't undefeatable. Invading the whole country with high moral is very, very difficult. But the Germans beat them in First World War, the Swedish beat them many times. We beat them in Crimea with the French and the Turks.

Sorry change that to invading Russia, you can grind them down like in WW1 but they just come back with a vengeance.

Russia is one of a rare few countries where invading or attempting to occupy and control the nation is just impossible. The other nations are China,Afghanistan (to control), though some would disagree on Afghanistan, it is relatively easy to invade, but controlling or keeping a firm grip on the nation is virtually impossible. It's been decades since there was someone who governed and held power over ALL of Afghanistan, its just different groups (Soviets, Taliban, USA,Karzai's government) have claimed they control Afghanistan, but in reality large sections have, are and will continue to be effectively ungoverned.

China's not impossible. As is demonstrated by many, many Chinese dynasties, several of them being non-Chinese (Mongols and Manchu mostly). Neither is Afghanistan, it's just nobody bothers because their nothing worth taking there.

Power lies where men believe it lies. If Russia is said to be impossible to invade, then it is. If the incompetent micromanaging fool Hitler can get to the gates of Moscow, someone better than him can go further.

An Imperial Federation with nukes could have taken Russia.

You've comically missed the point, the US won't split no matter how weak. Also, anarchists were in issue in the north cities during the 1850's which gave them a good excuse to avoid an unpopular war. After the war they moved south and got worse.

Look up the Battle of Kursk to see what the Russians do when it's warm. Also, Stalingrad was worthless; Hitler wanted to win.

I didn't mean 'forever'. At different points those areas have been conquered/united,
However, what I meant is that there is no current or recent power that is capable of invading China or Russia, and there has never been a power that would be capable of successfully controlling Afghanistan (i.e. No major insurgencies, law and order in all areas, etc) as it is. There may be a nation capable of doing all those simultaneously, in the future. But not now.
