Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I'm working on a story set in an alternate present where the Axis powers won WWII. I was inspired by the TV series "Fringe" and, later, the recent novel by Stephen King, "11/22/63." Like "The Man in the High Castle"-a novel I did not read-by Philip K. Dick, the attempted assassination of FDR is successful in this timeline and this leads to a chain of events that leads to a loss for the allies.

Unlike in "High Castle," America isn't conquered. But things aren't pretty. Economic, technological and social progress is decades behind and social and economic mobility is practically nonexistent.

I have so far:

-Alaska is a sovereign nation, officially known as the Republic of Alaska, where Slavic refugees have found a semblance of sanctuary against Nazi extermination pogroms

-Hawaii is under imperial Japanese domination as is Australia and New Zealand and just about the entire Pacific and southeastern Asia

-Several northern and eastern counties in Maine are now part of Canada

-Royal siblings, Elizabeth and Margaret, managed to escape to Canada during the German invasion of Britain but their parents weren't so lucky; their mother was raped to death as their father watched and he was then later brutally tortured and executed

-Skinheads are a common sight in many cities in the U.S. and segregation is still a bitter reality throughout the South

-For several decades now, the southern border states are in continuous warfare with German-backed Mexico trying to reclaim land taken by the U.S. back in the Mexican-American war

-The atomic bomb was never invented due to short-sighted Nazi exterminations of Jewish and Slavic scientists but allies-turned-rivals, Germany and Japan, race to unlock the secrets of the atom in present day

-The Nazi conquest of the Middle East led to America finding alternative means of energy and turned its sights on renewable power; efficient solar panels and tidal and wind turbines power American cities and transportation

-The Hindenburg disaster never happened

Go nuts. I love Paul Verhoeven flicks because speculates the most outrageous and daring things. The amusing and innovative details in "Robocop" and "Total Recall" and "Starship Troopers" and "Hollow Man" makes his films so enjoyable and memorable. That's what I'm going for here.

I always did find it funny how George Washington lost more battles then he won but managed to avoid any total, crushing defeats so the war simply became too militarily and politically and economically expensive to win. Of course, help from France, Spain and the Dutch Republic is not to be taken lightly.
Especially as the biggest battle took place in Europe. Six thousand French and Spanish casualties, nine ships sunk and the San Miguel captured.

Why are states trying to join Canada? And why is the US letting them? Secession law has always been a little funny, especially since the civil war, but it tends to er on the "not bloody likely" side.

It just sounds cool and reflects on how weak America has become even though it may not be the likeliest of things.

I got the idea from "11/22/63," a book I actually disliked because I found it to be so tedious, where the protagonist returns to a dystopian future, after he rescues JFK from assassination, where he learns his native Maine is now a province of Canada.

If you like Stephen King, you might like "11/22/63" but I hated the lousy science and King's trademark lack of cosmopolitanism.

I will not rest with Slavs stuck on ass freezing Alaska >_<

I protest to this silly idea and suggest you change it.

If anything, for plausibility's sake.

Indeed it's absurd. The very idea that Slavs would live in a cold climate is ridiculous.

If you want states to join Canada, Canada needs to be a beacon of security in a dark world. Give them nuclear weapons and prevent the USA from creating the image of the silly Canadian. Make them the heirs to the British Empire as Byzantium was to Rome.

Give them a firm grip on Greenland, Iceland and all former British possessions in the Americas. Swell their population with imperial refugees. 45 million, not counting external territories should be enough.

And keep the good flag.

I don't see how an Axis victorious world would be dystopian... think of all the Italian luxuries.

Skinheads in America would be wiped out honestly, if not arrested for treason by the government they'd be killed by their neighbors.
Oh Fine.

Oh hi you! Why don't you go check out the finery that is SGP??

In 1859 the US was fighting an unknown number of highly trained dragoon type warriors with better guns, Canada in a drawn out series of conflicts, and the anarchists.

You just added a bunch of things to a list and didn't think to make them make sense; at all.

I merely listed very horrific details about an Axis-ruled dystopian world that may not have been probable but is possible and grounded enough to be enjoyable.

I don't see how raping the royal family is enjoyable? Nor mass extermination for that matter.

It adds to the brutal and dystopian feel. But it doesn't work because the Nazis weren't some fantasy evil army. They were people.

Now there is no doubt there would be rape and murder if they invaded, but the Nazis didn't do that to any of the other royal houses they captured.

Gory details make this dystopian nightmare all the more entertaining.

I'm trying to channel my inner-Paul Verhoeven or inner-Stephen King with this story

*But didn't those other monarchies bomb German cities in their own version of the Blitz?

I know that a million German women were raped by red soldiers when the Soviet army invaded Berlin.

*I am in no way judging the Britain in their air attacks against the Third Reich. At least King George visited his Blitz-ravaged subjects unlike Hitler who was too cowardly to face the people.

As light as American history is on the Indian Wars I hope you're familiar with them.
For some reason no one ever mentions how many times the US attacked Canada, there was a sizible force in the northern US just to keep the Canadians from invading.
The anarchists? They killed the president, sort of worth noting.

Raping and pillaging was Russian. The Germans were obsessed with efficiency, if they won they wouldn't loose that the way they did in 1944. Puppet states can't go inflaming people.

I'm confuzled as to how they would win, Hitler didn't have the mentality to successfully take over a desert let alone Britain.

Why Can't I Hold All These Mongols?

They could have 'won' if they had really spread out the plan. So instead of invading huge tracts of Europe within less than five years, it would have been smarter to only secure an area at a time, then Nazify it and then move on. it would have taken a lot longer but it would have been smarter.

But then the US finishes with the pacific and the largest navy on the planet moves in with nonstop air support.

No, because everyone understood the British monarchy were figureheads, and that's just not something the Germans would do. The Germans would know where there Royal family was, and they wouldn't send a couple of SS thugs to capture them, the'd send proper soldiers who'd follow orders and not stop for a bit of bit of a rape.
