| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! After so many rejections from various magazines, I finally went out and published The End on my own. It's only in digital format however. I was looking forward to having a copy of the Analog (or whatever pulp) that had my story in it. Can't be helped. I've still got a ways to go in terms of sales before I pay off the copyright cost. |

The first page or so. Darkness. As with countless days before, his day always began with darkness. Each day he awoke, the question remained; was the darkness confined to his quarters, or did it now extend beyond? In the windowless, nearly pitch black room, he had but a few glowing lights to guide him toward the door. He long since sealed up the two windows in his quarters, for the ever fluctuating light of his sun kept him lying awake at night. He would toss and turn, and finally slip into unconsciousness, only to awake in the morning more tired than when he bedded down. To keep body and mind sound, he blocked out the light, exiling himself to the darkness that would shortly take its place as absolute ruler of the universe. He slept sufficiently the night before, though bad dreams would force him into the world of the waking. A new day may, or may not lie ahead of him, and he detested waiting for the outcome. Each morning it was the same. Each morning he approached the door, his body racked with anxiety. Did the last light in the universe finally fade into the night while he slept? Sleep was unavoidable, the consequence of an organic existence. He also dreaded sleep, wondering if the day before, while he closed the door to his quarters that it would be the last time he would ever see natural light. Each morning, it was the same routine; dread always filled his mornings, the dread of waiting. Was the end finally here? He would fall asleep with that question on his mind. He knew not which was worse; the end or the waiting. At least with the end, he would not have to live in turmoil any longer. Yet it was the waiting, the not knowing, that slowly gnawed away at his sanity. He took in a deep breath of chilly air as he pushed the door. A faint reddish glow burst through the open portal, breathing life into the tired soul. The sun did not fade with the night, and a new day dawned. He breathed a sigh of relief, a sigh that was quickly followed by one of resignation. The sun still shone, which meant he had yet another day in his life to live. He was very tired. Tired of a wretched and pointless existence. If he lived to see another tomorrow, would it matter? There would be none to follow him when he died. He was the last, a fact that he lived with for quite some time. |

Well done! Hope it gets some paper too! I dont understand if they publish this work (which is still very good) why they dont publish All Tomorrows. Owning a hardback copy of that would be beautiful. |

"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!" | |

It's not 70% for a $0.99 short story. I think it has to be between 2.99 and 9.99 for that. I'll publish there anyway, just so I can get more coverage. It should be up by tomorrow. |
