http://pterosaur-net.blogspot.pt/2012/04/its-dumb-its-awesome-its-our-lives-with.html Turns out azhdarchids really could eat people... By the way, do you think civilisation would take off if azhdarchids were alive? |

Of course it would. It did with lions and wolves at the gates, a bunch of fuzzy crocodiles won't stop it. |

It took off when there were a lot nastier animals around... We have a habit of killing off anything that threatens us. |

The problem is that none of those things can fly everywhere, and thus return... |

Ooooh sounds like someone's secretly whacking off to pterosaur porn. They are animals, they'd learn to avoid us or perish. |

We would rise to civilization, unless a pterosaur became a sophont first. But since we're not looking at that, what would happen is that we would have probably killed off almost all the large pterosaurs, with maybe the exception of an African or Asia species, since they would've adapted with us and managed to learn how to hunt-or how not to hunt-us. |

If these guys manage to stick around until we evolve, the probabilities that big specimens survive us is pitifully low. Dude, we could probably wipe out dragons during the stone age, a bunch of giant baby eating storks with delicate bodies isnt really gonna be a serious threat to the species. Also, if they survive until the modern age: guns. |

I don't want to sound like a pterosauraboo, but flying animals aren't "delicate bodied". The dromaeosaur tooth found in an azhdarchid bone was broken; the walls were thin, but the inner structure was quite hard. Same for birds, really; it's a misconception that hollow bones = weakness. That said, I suppose the giant azhdarchids would probably be decimated alongside the rest of the megafauna due to anthropogenic influence. Smaller species would almost certainly survive, but they'd probably not pose a threat. |

That is unless they learned to steer clear of people and prey on other things, then because they fly they may not be viewed as a common food source. Perhaps a more special one though. |

Out of curiosity, does anyone on this thread know what is the largest weight a creature in Earth's gravity can become before it becomes impossible to have wings large enough to give it enough lift for flight? Cause I imagine that even with all the weight saving strategies, the largest adzharchids would still weigh more than the largest modern flying creatures. And having a human-sized meal in the stomach adds extra weight. Edited by Tartarus, Apr 30 2012, 06:07 PM.

I think the best example of this is the good ol' Haast's Eagle. If we can't kill the bastards themselves then we kill everything else they eat, and hunt their children. Darwin bless Homo Sapiens. |

IIRC hollow bones are less likely to break than solid bones. |

Clearly the Goliath Beetle with it's gargantuan mass is the largest an organism can become using natural Earthly methods of flight.
