Okay, so the other day I watched the movie Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind by Hiyao Miyazaki. The part of it that caught my attention the most was the animals, especially the giant arthropods. As usual, the idea is to speculate on what makes these creatures work, NOT to rain on the movie (not that you'd want to--it's amazing).

The Ohmu are way, way, way, way, way, way too large for any arthropod :P

I actually like the poisonous fungus that covers so much of the land it is called the "sea of decay". It´s like what the fungus epidemic of Primeval series 3 could have turned into, minus stupid humanoid killer fungus monsters running around.

Well, the fungus itself isn't poisonous, it's just pumping out the toxins in the ground and leaving behind purified soil.

The horseclaw birds are very obviously phorhusrhacids.

The Omu, I think, are giant trilobites. Arthropods can't biologically grow beyond giant crab size, but you can use non-scientific explanations like demonic powers.

I fucking love the manga. It has a thing that radiates light, but that light IS EVIL.

Yes, I read the comi-er-manga first and expected something similar in the movie. I was not entirely pleased. But I own it, and EVERYTHING IS DESIGNED LIFE SO WE DO NOT NEED EVOLUTIONARY EXPLANATION.

But if you can figure out how to have a giant arthropod exist in any reasonable way then you can go with that.

They're largely hollow, I assume. Just look at when she's inside the dead one, most of that huge shell is full of air, only a tiny part of the body is really a body.

I think they're a bunch of Japanese people in rubber suits.

No. Even better.

They're drawings.

Phorusrhacids? They look more like gastornithids to me.
