What speculative biological implications could this have? I'm imagining a gigantic organic computer consisting of miles of underground tunnels inhabited by swarming organisms. Perhaps something like this already exists on Earth.

In a completely unrealted stories, natural populations of soldier crabs, and seagulls, their primary predator, are plummeting, while beachside plankton and insect growths are rendering popular beaches dangerous."

That made my day, and really this would give a whole new aspect to animal power...

It just means that crabs are demonic beings, and therefore will evolve an eusocial society akin to that of ants in Hell.
