| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. The Yautja? I don't remember them having much of a government...or maybe thats why they cant be conquered, they're too spread out. |

"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!" | |

Generally the Yautja are interested in simply hunting. They stay wayyy out of politics generally although can have great effect on it. E.g. a Yautja might target an Asari Matriarch for sport and kill her... Although they are impossible to track and their homeworld is located somewhere deep in the Terminus. |

I've never read animorphs, could you give me a list of some of the species in there and a brief description if you could please? I'll work on trying to implement them.

Ok, then. Here are a few species from the animorphs series. Andalites The Andalites are fictional aliens from the book series and TV series Animorphs. Andalites resemble centaurs of Greek mythology, with a lower body similar to a horse and a torso similar to a human. The two arms on their upper bodies are relatively weak by human standards, and end with seven-fingered hands. Andalites are seen to be incredibly agile on their four hoofed legs. Their entire bodies are covered in fur, the males blue and tan in colour while the females have been depicted as being purple. The head of an Andalite has a pair of almond-shaped eyes, as well as a second pair of "stalk-eyes" mounted on two thick stalks that rise from the top of their heads, giving them a 360-degree range of vision. The main eyes are glittery green or gold in colour. Their sense of sight is similar to that of humans, with the stalk eyes described as being capable of seeing a slightly wider spectrum of light wavelengths. A notable facial feature is the lack of a mouth. Andalites feed by crushing grass beneath their hooves, absorbing the nutrients from the plants, and communicate by means of thought-speech, a kind of telepathy. In the place where a human nose would be located, Andalites possess three vertical slits, allowing them to breathe. They have three hearts, giving them physical speed and endurance beyond what a human can achieve. An Andalite's normal body temperature (in Fahrenheit) is shown to be 91.3 degrees. Andalites also possess an organ in the back of their head called the Tria gland. The Tria gland keeps disease organisms away from the rest of the body. More specifically, the Tria gland is in the back of the head, even with the bottom of the ears, in the dead center. Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill needed his removed due to inflammation in book #29, The Sickness. Andalites evolved as prey animals, but possess a formidable defense in the form of the single, scythe-shaped blade at the end of their long tails. The female tail blade is noticeably smaller than that of the male, and more similar to a scalpel than a blade. The bladed tail is long enough to reach well in front of the Andalite, allowing them to strike quickly and deeply at an opponent. A common Andalite battle technique is to turn the blade flat against their target at the last possible instant, delivering a blow that renders the opponent unconscious rather than fatally cutting them. The Andalite tail is also an important part of their culture, and is frequently referenced in poetry and rituals. For example, the word shorm comes from the Andalite word for 'tail-blade', and is used to describe a fellow Andalite who could be trusted to place his tail-blade at one's own throat without feeling threatened; essentially, a best friend. Yeerks In the series, a Yeerk is described as a parasite that takes over the body of another being by infesting a host's brain through their ear canal. It resembles a small, grey-green slug about five or six inches long (see The Capture, first U.S. print edition page 150). Yeerks in their natural state have decent senses of smell and touch, but they are blind until they enter a host, as they do not have eyes. They possess antennae-like protrusions called palps, as well as osmosis nodes, small organs that process nutrients in the Yeerks' native pools. Although the presence of a circulatory system of some kind is debatable, apparently Yeerks have no hearts, as evidenced by the description of a human morphing into a Yeerk, in which the human heart stops and dissolves away completely. Yeerks communicate in their natural state using a language of ultrasonic squeaks, and use sonar to get a basic picture of the surroundings. The process of infestation by a Yeerk is not totally painless, but it does not hurt as much as it seems like it should, as a numbing chemical is secreted to anesthetize and dilate the ear canal itself so that the slug-like Yeerk will not cause any physical harm to the host. It is able to manipulate and puncture a variety of alien ear canal structures including bone and membrane to reach the brain. As the Yeerk reaches the eardrum and other ear canal structures, it pushes them aside. After the process of infestation, the Yeerk flattens itself into what has been described as "3 parts, two wrinkled, one smooth", which is the brain. From there, all control is submitted involuntarily to the Yeerk (however, the host may fight and very rarely win). At this point, the host has no control over itself, no secrets, and no privacy. The Yeerk can even play with the memories of its former host. Although control can be returned to the host by the Yeerk, this does not occur often as most Yeerks prefer their parasitic relationship to a symbiotic one. Yeerks cannot stay within their hosts for more than three Earth days. After this period of time, they need to bathe in a Yeerk pool and absorb Kandrona rays, the rays of their home sun. Without these rays, a Yeerk eventually starves. However, there are two ways for Yeerks to survive without Kandrona rays, one terrible and cruel way being to eat other Yeerks. This cannibalism is not normal, a taboo and is only displayed by one Yeerk, Esplin 9466 the lesser (Visser Three's twin sibling) after being cut off from Yeerk society by his twin. He kills Human-Controllers, opening their heads with brute force and eats the Yeerk inside with his maw. Yeerks may also survive a lack of Kandrona rays by consuming instant maple and ginger oatmeal, although its effects are narcotic and cause the Yeerk to become insane, dependent and trapped within its host indeterminately, without the need to feed in a Yeerk pool. The host may regain some control of its body from time to time, while the Yeerk has lapsed into narcotic-induced lack of control. Usually the Yeerk is not intelligible after full addiction has occurred, since the chemicals in the oatmeal damage part of its brain stem. The Animorphs discover this upon investigating a man named George Edelman who attempts to commit suicide. Edelman is put in an insane asylum, where the Animorphs follow him and discover the Yeerks' weakness to the oatmeal. The Yeerk in his head has succumbed to this weakness, and Edelman is able to speak and move freely, except when his Yeerk seizes control and rants unintelligibly in alien languages. Yeerks may intake oat flakes by way of their hosts. How the dietary fiber exactly reaches the brain is unknown. Hork-Bajir The Hork-Bajir /ˌhɔrk.bəˈdʒɪər/[1] are a race of aliens in the Animorphs novels. The Hork-Bajir are fictional aliens that are usually about seven feet tall. They are a dark shade of green and have three-toed theropod feet. Their necks are long and they have a mouth that resembles a falcon's beak with teeth. Their legs are long and their knees bend backwards. They have blades at the wrist, arm, knees, and forehead; plus spikes on the tail. Marco describes them as "walking salad shooters" when they are first seen in the first book because of their spikes. Their horn-like blades vary by gender, males having three and females having two, although artwork in the series does not convey this. The Hork-Bajir were taken over completely and utterly by the parasitic Yeerks. Despite their fearsome looks, they are peaceful beings who are xyophags (meaning they eat tree bark) that utilize their blades to harvest tree bark. Different blades have specific jobs for cutting bark. Elbow blades for a straight cut, wrist blades for taking strips of bark off, and knee blades for cutting bark close to the ground. Unlike the traditional idea of aliens, they are not super-advanced; in fact, the average Hork-Bajir intelligence is said to be around the level of a four-year-old human, except for seers (see below), though they are still considered sentient. Even with Yeerks under their control Hork-Bajir seem to have mental limits; Hork-Bajir-Controllers often speak in a mixture of human and alien languages, which is explained as being because the Hork-Bajir brain has limited linguistic abilities (their own language is believed to be very limited). They possess no technology of their own. Hork-Bajir do, however, have incredible endurance and healing ability. One, named Jara Hamee, once sliced his very head open, exposing his brain, to demonstrate the absence of a Yeerk in his head. It immediately scarred over afterwards. The Hork-Bajir lifespan is unknown, but is apparently shorter than that of humans or Andalites; the Hork-Bajir were apparently conquered in the 1960s by Earth standards, with Toby Hamee, the first free Hork-Bajir born since the Yeerk conquest, being the great-granddaughter of the leaders of the rebellion against the Yeerks. It also seems that they grow to adulthood very quickly, as Toby Hamee was born and grew to near-maturity in no more than a few years; The Hork-Bajir Chronicles also mentions that Hork-Bajir choose mates sooner than Andalites do. In combat, an Andalite tail is faster than a Hork-Bajir blade, although Hork-Bajir warriors still pose a great threat to their Andalite counterparts and they are the main shock troops of the Yeerk Empire. All six of the Animorphs have Hork-Bajir morphs. Rachel and Tobias acquire them in the 13th book, and everyone else acquires the morph in the 34th book. However, Cassie and Marco have double Hork-Bajir morphs, meaning they have two Hork-Bajir's DNA. Cassie acquires one in book 34 and the other in book 44, and Marco acquires one in book 34 and the other in book 45. Taxxon The Taxxons are a fictional sentient race in the Animorphs book series by K.A. Applegate, one of the species conceptually created for the series. They resemble giant, 10-foot-long (3.0 m) centipedes, with the forward one-third portion of their body held erect. They move on many rows of needle-like legs and the legs give way to claws not unlike that of a lobster. The front/top of their bodies end in a mouth like a lamprey, ringed with many razor sharp teeth. The area around their mouths (on what passes for a "head" on these creatures) is ringed with four red bulbous compound eyes on stalks. Taxxons have an insatiable hunger for flesh. They eat anything dead, nearly dead, or for that matter anything that won't kill them while they're eating it, though they will avoid trying to eat anything they feel could fight back, such as an Andalite. Taxxons are highly cannibalistic, and will quickly turn on each other at the first sign of weakness. This hunger is so strong that on one occasion, when a Taxxon was once cut in half, it began devouring the other half in its death throes. Taxxon hunger comes from a built-in eating disorder; when morphing a Taxxon, Tobias notes that its hunger instinct is exaggerated by its sentience. The Taxxons are literally mad with hunger, out of an irrational fear of starvation. This may be because their planet, while apparently host to very large bodies of water (hence their mobility in aquatic environments - see below) is largely devoid of life; this may have resulted in the Taxxon hunger developing as an evolutionary advantage, taking the opportunity of any and all food the moment it becomes available. They apparently eliminate waste from their foods as an ooze excreted through their skin, at least in the case of eating dirt, which they do for digging. They are the second race the Yeerks enslaved, after the Hork-Bajir. These are the main ones. Sorry if it's too much info, I copied it right off of Wikipedia. |

Andalites- I'm not sure how long such a race would survive in a galaxy such as this? (Might just be because the first time I googled them I had safe search off... Oh God!). Yeerks- Absolutely love them! They would definitely fit in this world although they would probably be found largely around the borders of the Terminus Systems. I highly doubt they would have any sort of an Empire as they seem to in the Animorphs Universe. Would be interesting for them to be used by many pirate gangs and other criminal organisations for interrogation, perhaps even Yeerk criminal syndicates being made up of them? Yeerk using the bodies of the more feral and savage species such as Krogan... Hork-Bajir- Would very quickly end up a slave race or vassal depending on where they are located in space? If located in Sith, Batarian or Terminus Systems they would be enslaved and slowly worked into extinction while their homeworld is stripmined. Taxxons- Would cope very well in this Universe and I can imagine them lurking in the slums of many poverty stricken worlds across the galaxy. Hiding away on some of the older starships as well, I've been thinking about all the different creatures which would be lurking in the bowels of the huge super carrier ships. Taxxons, Xenomorphs, Genestealers... |
