| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Except for the fact that any decent computerized targeting system will be able to vaporize them. Maneuvering in space isn't easy; there's no air to use in subtle course corrections, so drones would be easy targets. All you need is a bunch of short-range lasers to take them out before they get within range of your ship. |

They're not that close to you, and their firing systems are good too. If your lasers can't stop one missile, they won't be able to stop a drone either. And why would you use laser PD? Missile PD is much better. Manoeuvring doesn't require air, you have all sorts of thrusters. Look at an Apollo CSM, those little sets of thrusters on the side? They're independently fueled and allow microadjustments. At spacewar distances, that's more than good enough. So drones win. Also, as a sidenote, ships have far bigger silhouettes under... well... ANY detection system and so can be shot from far further away. Their thrusters are bigger too. And there are fewer of them. And if one is destroyed, there're big repercussions. Lasers miss at these kinds of ranges, especially as all ships will be constantly moving. Missiles, and missile buses, are the tools of war in the void. Edited by Holben, Apr 23 2012, 11:42 AM.

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

I don't mind making sure the universe is up and running first. Still waiting for my picture anyway. Both missiles and lasers are of value. Missiles are fine for long range missile defence, but you need something shooting as your last line of defence, as we learned in the Falklands War where Argentine planes managed to get close enough to Royal Navy ships to lob unguided munitions. For now projectiles are better, but as technology move on lasers will be better for last ditch missile defence. You don't have to choose one or the other. I don't really like the idea of fighter drones at all, they don't fit with the universes. The Geth even have fighters, and they are software! |

Apart from maybe small boarding drones which try and rip their way into a ship, like the sentinels from the matrix? |

Geth have fighters, but they seem pretty useless. It's probably a holdover or something, but it's definitely not logical. |

We've got FTL and sexy aliens, just let fighters go. Matrix style sentinels would not be the best weapons, they would probably get shot down fairly easily. You'd need to swarm the enemy with them, or they would have to already be badly damaged. I think drones should be limited to support roles, this is going to be a universe distrustful of AI. |

Yeah but FTL and sexy aliens are cool. I think we should expand the universe as much as possible now, anyway. |

I still think we need fighters. A UNSC frigate would have them, we've got to stick in the universe being created. Otherwise we'd have a Podnought or a LAC carrier. |

Well, ok. But UNSC Longsword fighters are about 70m long, and sabres around 25m. They'll take up a lot of space. |

Hence why we need Vipers or Starfuries. Spoiler: click to toggle

I'm in support of Starfuries. They're good designs in that they actually consider how space works, too. |

Yeah, there was some talk about NASA making some vehicles partly based on them in the 90's. Shame they don't work in atmo. Guess that's what Thunderbolts are for.

Probably the FPA, the UNSC and Sith probably wouldn't sell their stuff to some "rebel" nation, and the Sith probably have very different fighters. Or they could be indigenous New Singaporean fighters. |
