Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

......I...think your right. Reboot time.
"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!"

But where would Man-X fit in this world? He doesn’t fit into those categories. I mean, I have an idea, but I’m not sure it would fit...

Im pretty sure Man-X will fit in some way, perhaps some sort of Nazi experiment with the occult?

I have an idea for the basis of all superpowers: All superpowers come from the metagene, a gene found only in humans. For the vast majority of the population, the gene is inactive. For others, it's active, bu dormant. When someone with a dormant metagene experiences, puberty, a traumatic event, etc., their metagene will activate. It basically alters reality to give the person powers; there's a psychological aspect to it as well, resulting in powers based on specific phenomena, animals, etc. A variant of the metagene is responsible for magic as well, but there are still nonhuman magical beings.

*gets called a chicken*

*turns around*

Nobody calls me chicken, Needles, NOBODY!

Then, of course, your future self gets in a car wreck and you can't become a musician like you always wanted. You get fired from your job in 2015. This inspires your girlfriend to change the fact that you hate being called chicken.

Meanwhile, in 1885, you almost get killed in a shoot-out and it is at that point you decide that you're going to let people call you chicken.

When you return to 1985, Needles challenges you to a car race. You accept, but do not press the gas pedal and make it out safely. Needles, on the other hand, is severely injured in the car wreck.

Anyway, if we're thinking DC-style reboot here, I've got an idea. Especially if we don't want this tied to the SSU universe anymore (I'm all for keeping it in the SSU universe if we can clearly outline the history. But if we can't, I say we make it a different superpowered world).

In my idea, the timeline diverges in 1944. Due to relative failure by the Allies on D-Day, the Axis Powers are still going strong. FDR orders the Manhattan Project to work on developing the atomic bomb, which they do at breakneck speed.

Meanwhile, the conflict in the Pacific theater is winding down, due to a successful invasion of the Japanese mainland. The Allies (mainly the Chinese and Americans) march valliantly into Tokyo and the Japanese surrender.

The war is still going strong in the European theater however. Massive conflict is breaking out all over England and Italy. It looks like the Axis is going to take England, but the Allies start to take over southern Italy.

Churchill, Stalin, and Truman (who took over as president after FDR died) meet together in secret to discuss dropping atomic bombs on Germany to end the war. The three agree and, in November of 1945, the Allies drop atomic bombs on Berlin and some other German city (yet to be determined).

Hitler, still alive in this scenario, quickly surrendered. Italy fell soon after.

The world soon reverts to a power struggle between America and, as in our timeline, Soviet Russia. Unlike in our timeline, the Soviets and the Americans both refrain from further developing nuclear weapons, since two devastating nukes were dropped smack dab in the middle of Western Civilization.

Instead, the Soviets and the Americans start pursuing genetics research. The field of genetics is farther along at this point (1950s) than it was at the same time in our timeline (the structure of DNA had been discovered 20 years earlier than in our timeline. Also, the Soviet government was generally friendlier to science back in the 1920s, particularly in terms of hybridizing humans with chimpanzees).

The Soviets finally perfect human-chimp hybridization (through the use of transgenics) in the mid-1950s and plan on moving to different animals (using, again, transgenics). This results in a genetic arms race rather than the space race that occurred in our timeline. American scientists start to pursue research on the human brain and how it interacts with the rest of the world. They discover that a certain drug (related to LSD, but without all the hallucogenic properties), when genetically introduced to the brain, allows the human test subject to gain psychic abilities (telekinesis, pyrokinesis, "bending" (yes, like in "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "The Legend of Korra"), ESP, etc).

In short, Americans tend to work more with the mental side of the genetics issue, creating mind-related superhumans. The Soviets, however, work more with the physical side of the genetics issue, producing bizarre human/animal hybrids and shapeshifters (among other things).

Eventually, the Soviets and Americans get embroiled in a massive conflict centered on who controls Japan. This issue had been boiling for a long time. It was thought that the Soviets and Americans would go to war shortly after WW2. Instead, the two countries get involved in two wars (not necessarily with each other) before the Japanese War.

First, the Korean War. In our timeline, this results in the splitting of Korea into North Korea (communist) and South Korea (democratic). However, in this timeline, with the Soviets fighting as well, North Korea wins and the Korean peninsula becomes communist.

Second, the Vietnam War. In our timeline, this was largely a "useless" war to prevent Vietnam from becoming completely communist (which it ended up doing). However, in this timeline, it is more of a war with the French over the issue of Vietnamese independence. France wanted to hold onto its Indochinese colony in order to provide a springboard to invade Japan (which would enable France to control the Pacific). The United States, however, sided with the Vietnamese rebels and helped them oust France which soon became resentful of America. However, the Vietnamese came to love its Deliverers of Democracy and became a huge boon to American efforts in the Cold War.

Meanwhile, the Soviets are sending shapeshifting super-forces to Cuba in order to attempt to invade Florida. President Lodge (Henry Cabot Lodge, a Republican, is president in 1970 when this Cuban Super Crisis is taking place. Nixon was president from 1960 to 1968 and Lodge, his vice-president during those two terms, won a decisive victory over Lyndon Baines Johnson, whose runningmate was, interestingly, John F. Kennedy) attempted to negotiate with the Soviet Leader Nikita Krushchev.

Lodge offered to let Krushchev house supers in Cuba if Krushchev would allow Lodge to place supers in Japan. Krushchev (more militaristic in this timeline) refused and declared war on the United States. Major conflicts arose in Mexico, Florida, and Japan where supers fought alongside nonsuperhuman soldiers. This would be the future of war: a main strike force of supers with nonsupers assisting on the tactical side of things.

Anyway, the Americans end up beating the Soviets and take control of Japan. The Soviets remove their superhuman army from Cuba and go back to lick their wounds to fight another day.

Meanwhile, in the United States, superhumans are becoming increasingly more common. American-created superhumans (as well as Soviet superhuman immigrants) are procreating with the nonsuper population of America, creating a whole new generation of supers (the same thing, of course, is happening all over the world).

The nonsuperhuman population fears that the superhumans will soon come to rule over the normal population. Thus the government decides to put massive restrictions on the the superhuman population:

1) each citizen (super or not) is required to carry around a government-issued ID (called a B.I.D. or Biological Identity Detector) which states the person's name and superhuman class (nonsupers are classified as N-class humans, standing for "non-superpowered")

2) each super is required to have a detailed list of their powers on file with the government, as well as their superhuman identity

3) vigilante crime is outlawed. Superhumans can choose to join a superhuman police force though. This requires two years of intense training at a remote location, which teaches the super how to use their powers and how to control them so as not to cause billions of dollars in damages

Anyway, I'm not sure where we stand on a reboot. I'm not sure where we stand on whether we want to remain in the SSU universe or not. If we do decide to reboot, and just create another superpowered universe unrelated to Singe's SSU, then we could always use the idea I just posted.
This!

It's everything I wanted and more. Let's do it

I like Canis' idea a lot. I'll join the RP.
Also I when we create a character, can they change sides (villain to hero, hero to villain, anti-hero to anti-villain, etc)?

Hahahaha. NO.

What makes humans so special? Originally, Midori wasn't a wasp/oak/human fusion created by atomic bombings. Originally, he was all Oak tree. Dial shot it down because it sounded 'dumb'. I just think he's speciesist.

I say that if the Americans and Russians wanted to create super plants and super German Shepherds, or even super slugs, I say they damn well can.

After all, there are something that you might not want to do to a human. Say you need to set someone of fire. Sure you could use a human, but that'd take too long. So send in a flaming unicorn and utterly destroy the enemies' shit.

Take Bathound and Krypto for examples of super animals.

But yes, I like this new thing. If the SSU is our now-dead DC, then this is our Marvel. So I suggest the name "ISIHPOAMA" (pron. Isi-Hap-Oa-MAW). Short for "I swear I had pants on a minute ago."

Feel free to use the character template from the now-dead SSU.

I have to agree on fakey with the super oak here.

I didn't want to give up on the SSU, but it seemed I have been outvoted so...reboot it shale be.

I will close down the old SSU and start a new sign up topic with a copy of canis's history and a slightly altered template.

Can we add more to the new world history, example a modified civil rights movement in the late fifties and eventually a super human civil rights movement from the mid eighties to modern time?( depending of course upon the time of the setting of course.)
