Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Anyways, I fucking hate all the homophobic subtext George Lucas shoves into everything he's done.

I think he (It? Hutts can switch genders...) was just supposed to be an annoying, sissy-boy rich guy. I don't think that there was any malice towards homosexuals in his character.

(Also, you're one to talk, what with your whole "gay dino-nerd orgies" rant.)

@russ, johnfaa is gay. When he said the thing about dino orgies or whatever, that was pretty explicit, and considering he's gay, we understood he wasn't being serious. On the other hand, when a straight filmmaker makes subtle hints at gays being inferior, that strongly suggests a homophobic polemic. It's like, if I were to say something ridiculous like "people named mike are dicks", that's different from if somebody with a different name were to write a bunch of stories where all the evil characters were coincidentally called mike.

That being said, I'm unaware of any homophobic polemic in starwars, though probably just because i hadn't looked for it. There's a bunch of shady stuff in there that I didn't notice the few times around, like how the trade federation guys were obvious asian stereotypes (their pronunciation, eyes, facial expressions, and most of all, the fact that they make robots). Could you enlighten us, Johnfaa?

The main reason I dislike star wars is because it tries to be all spiritual and moral, yet the morals it's supposed to be teaching aren't exactly clear, like Johnfaa said. I mean, there's a good side and a bad side... but what defines good and bad? it's never said, they just say there's good stuff and bad stuff and whoah u guys some guys can harness good stuff and bad stuff. I mean, it was entertaining, but it lacked meaning and proper structure. There were also a lot of wipes, which is typically associated with a sophomoric filming style. You could argue star wars was purposefully subverting audience expectations by including such cheesiness, but I would argue the entire thing is cheesy and badly planned, so it fits perfectly. In fact, that's about it; I can enjoy star wars as a good cheesy movie, the kind you know isn't meant to be great, just entertaining. It's like, it's not just a space opera, it's a space soap opera. What pisses me off is how it's then hailed as a cultural masterpiece. Also, the fact that it's so ingrained in our cultural perception of scifi means that people tend to infer that all scifi is similarly cheesy, leading to the nerd stereotype that I'm sure we've all been a victim to.

I think the whole "cultural masterpiece" comes from the fact that it set the stage for numerous science fiction movies.

(Also, the Trade Federation is a bit of a poke at capitalism, and its leader, Nute Gunray, is a direct parody of Newt Gingrich.)

Nute Gunray, Lott Dod. Nute = Newt Gingrich, Gunray = Ronald Reagan ('ray-gun'). Lott Dod is a combination of two senator's names, Trent Lott and Christopher Dodd, I believe.

All these names are plays off of people who supported the "Star Wars" SDI thing. Obviously Lucas' way of getting back at them. :P

I think just generally the Star Wars thing is "take real world culture/accent/stereotype" and use it as a basis for more fantastic elements (aliens, trade federations, etc). I don't think it's necessarily a racist/insensitive thing.

For example, presumably upper class characters (from Coruscant, etc) speak with British accents. Lower class characters (stormtroopers, rebel personnel, Luke Skywalker) speak with American accents. The Pantorans speak with South African accents (which, as the supposed accents were spoken by non-SAians with no clue on how the accent should sound, I never noticed).

Also, there is supposed to be some huge number of clones in the clone war, and they're all played by Temura Morrison, who is (partly) of Maori descent. A large portion of the Star Wars universe is therefore presumably non-white.

I don't think things like Watto or Jar Jar or the Meinodians are supposed to be insensitive caricatures, just caricatures. It's a storytelling device that can go (badly) wrong.

Also, I hated Ziro the Hutt. Not because of any anti-gay subtext, but because they were extremely annoying. I don't know, maybe that was the intention. Why, anayway, are hermaphrodites supposed to identify as male or female? The concepts as we know them should be practically irrelevant to them, unless their culture was heavily influenced by a non-hermaphrodite species.

Yeah, Star Wars is very comic-book in that regard. Apparently a sequel trilogy (i.e. after VI) would have subverted the usual 'good and evil' concept and had more grey areas, or something like that.
A hard mathematical figure provides a sort of enlightenment to one's understanding of an idea that is never matched by mere guesswork.

I think Star Wars is good. If you ignore all the Jedi bullshit. The Empire is badass (Star Destroyers), the rebels also have some cool stuff. Harrison Ford nails it and who doesn't want chewie as a bodyguard? I think that is the appeal of star wars. Plus light sabers are pretty cool too.

Star Wars is just a bunch of astronauts fighting robots

If that's your idea of Star Wars, then you've probably only been exposed to the prequels, in which case I can see why you think the whole thing is terrible. Watch the ORIGINAL trilogy, and then we'll talk.

i guess if you're not too picky about details and believability, then yeah Star Wars is ok. my problem is that i'm really picky about the believability, detail, and plot of movies.

movies also have to be consistent for me, which Star Wars wasn't. i remember leah saying that she remembered her mother, but she "was always sad"... did she remember her in the womb?

She did see her when she was born...

Also, I like Star Wars for the sheer fact that it pioneered the "used future" look.

The older films have their issues too, it's just they have plenty of nostalgia to protect them.

The Jedi stuff is a bit dull, I much prefer the Clone Wars episodes when it's all about the clones. There was a great moment in a recent episode where they are doing disaster relief on a world with tiny, incomprehensible hyperactive tribal natives. "Great! Its gonna be another one of those planets" check about one minute in.

And of course there are the improved Chinese subtitles.
