| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Am I the only one here who thinks Miocene is a bit US-centric? I'm not trying to be an arsehole, but read his posts and his general attitude ,as well as his worldview, seem to hint to a US-centric viewpoint, he just hasn't said anything overtly yet. Im serious I'm getting a real vibe that Miocene is an American tween who is unaware that many here are not actually living in, or from, the USA , (and a few don't live in the English speaking world either). I know I sound like a dickhead, but I can actually see Miocene saying tomato in that wierd American way. It's beginning to freak me out. Just how strong the US vibe is from him. Seriously, with people like Canis and Parasky (and even Fakey) I've never even given their nationality a second thought, the same goes for most here. Anyhow, that was my rant. |

Hahaha I think it is quite hard to ignore my nationality, in fact I reckon I have toned it down since I first joined. I think when he starts to mature he will drop that attitude. At least this forum will help him grasp other cultures, its a shame apart from Mr. Faa our other english second languagers are not so prominent. I miss Cephlaken, dragontunders is awesome as is Bexi

I get a little of that, yeah. He does seem to be a little ignorant of the multinational nature of this forum. I'm American, but I manage to avert the U.S.-centric thing by absolutely despising my country.

It seems that Watto was very lenient with Anakin. Either way, I think the best thing to compare it to would be to putting together a computer from already available parts. A 9 year old could do that, I suppose, especially if they're some sort of force-enabled genius.
Yeah, I think that's a particularly good explanation. Instead of cohabitating Middle Earth with orks and trolls and hobbits and whatnot, they're in their own galaxy with all sorts of alien species.
I agree. Star Wars isn't true 'science fiction', and it isn't fantasy in the 'dragons and castles' sense. It's a kind of 'science fantasy'. |

Why is that? I love your country. There are many aspects of it I loathe, much of your foreign policy leaves a lot to be desired, I just can't get my head around your resistance to universal health care for ALL. I can't bare much of the Americanization of the rest of the world through Hollywood and McDonalds chain vomit food. But there is a lot going for the USA too. Her people. Her amazing achievements. The world's BEST motorcycles for example. Sure they're not hi-tech. But they're "magic". If I have to explain the magic of Harley Davidson, there'd be no point, because if you don't get it, you never will. I love my country, Australia, but I despise most of my political leaders. I hate our sports obsessed culture - where some dumb cricket player is universally trumpeted as a national hero, but some brilliant research doctor who creates a bionic ear is virtually unknown. I went for a bike ride on Thursday night (motorcycle, MADE IN AMERICA, in Milwaukee, but some parts were made in Japan, some in Manaus in Brazil, and the disc brake rotors were made in Adelaide South Australia), it had been raining, but had stopped, as I rode past a road-side plantation of gum trees, I got that wonderful smell of wet decaying eucalyptus leaves, fantastic! It's one of my favourite smells in the world! If I had to live outside of Australia, I'd have to find out where there were some gum trees growing and head on over there when it rained for a "dose of home". California has Aussie gum trees all over the place. Edited by Zoroaster, Apr 1 2012, 08:40 PM.

George Lucas "blesses" us with MANY homophobic commentaries. It is more appearent in the Expanded Universe, that is true, but there is hateful subtext in the movies as well. For instance, the only LGBT character is a depraved ugly slug. |

This. This is one of the things I hate about human society in general. It happens in America waaaaay more than I'd like. Only not with cricket players (I doubt many Americans have even heard of cricket). Try American football or basketball players. |

Same in England with footballers, for example Torres earns £200,000 a week. Just for playing football. Meanwhile my uncle who works at Glasgow University researching Prostrate Cancer can barely scrape a living. Its a sad world. John- I really don't think it was intentional. You could argue the same about Game of Thrones, the gay characters in that are shown to be scheming and cowardly. But nobody gives a shit as its fiction. The fact is that if Han Solo was gay you would be arguing that not all gay people are conniving smugglers. It would be rather funy the arguments of if Chewie was gay. I love the US, its a stunning country. I will never forget swimming in Lake Michigan or the towering streets of Chicago, the deserts in Arizona etc. Those are the sorts of memories which stay with you. Also the steak houses in America are awesome! I love 'em. I do think Pinewood films are better than Hollywood ones though

wait there are no mentioned gays in GoT (and book, and the other parts of ASOIAF series) Renly Baratheon and Loras Tyrell are both bisexuals and actually they are known as a great knights (and kings), are quite popular and surely they aren't scheming cowards.. and no Petyr Baelish is not gay too and Varys.. who knows, but nothing has been mentioned

Examples? I haven't seen ANY gay (or even "implied gay") characters at all. |

I agree with Russ. I don't think we are presented with any character in the films who is gay. Ziro is flamboyant, but that doesn't necessarily mean they/he/it is gay. Apparently it's established later on that Ziro is attracted to females... But, by extension, what is so darn special about being gay? I mean, there's nothing stopping a person from being gay and evil; that doesn't mean that all gay people are evil. Plenty of heterosexual people have appeared in fiction and been portrayed as evil or 'bad', noone complains about any sort of anti-heterosexual agenda based on this fact. Star Wars doesn't need to shove gay people in your face. It's at least partially aimed at children (which, I suppose, also depends on the part of the franchise), it doesn't pay major attention to sexual relationships, either gay or straight ones. |

Not everyone needs a bionic ear so they don't bother to appreciate it, most everyone has grown up exposed to role models loving sports, not to mention it is simple enough they can appreciate it. Not me though, my role models spat on the sport obsessed subcultures. Anyway, I think we should find Miocene and flog him severely. |
