| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. There was originally going to be a book about how humans came to the Star Wars galaxy, called Alien Exodus. Basically, the humans were time travelers who came from the world of another George Lucas movie, THX1138. It was never published (some say at Lucas's request) but it would have answered a lot of questions.

I was going to read through this whole topic before voicing my opinion on the matter, but I figured: "Eh, just post." Anyway, I do like "Star Wars," but mostly from a cinematographic point of view. The special effects of "A New Hope" were ahead of its time, even though they might look a little dated now. Plus, the music of almost all the films was absolutely fantastic! John Williams is a composing god (I swear someone needs to invent a time machine and give a CD of "The Imperial March" to Adolf Hitler. That music (Darth Vader's theme, for those who don't know) sounds so much like it should be the anthem of Nazi Germany that it's not even funny!). That said, there are only two "Star Wars" movies that I actually enjoy: "Revenge of the Sith" and "The Empire Strikes Back." These chronicle Anakin Skywalker's fall from grace to pure evil and, in the case of the latter film, how that evil eventually manifested. The other films are, in my opinion, crap. "A New Hope" and "Return of the Jedi" are tolerable, but the other two are some of the worst movies of all time. As for "Harry Potter," I thoroughly enjoyed both the films and the books. They are, while aimed at children (at least in the early books), quite gritty and dark. Quite frankly, this series is the only fantasy that I actually enjoy. Everything else just seems extremely cliche. In my opinion, the rest of the fantasy genre is just a bunch of elves, dwarves, and humans fighting against some ultimate evil (that is evil for absolutely no reason) with swords while they live in castles and blah blah blah. That said though, I do enjoy the "Lord of the Rings" movies (extended editions though. The theatrical versions just cut too much of the plot). I have yet read the books though, much as I want to. I tried to read "The Hobbit," but I couldn't force myself to keep going. |

Canis I am with you on the fantasy genre stagnating. I think the only ones who pull it off is Song of Ice and Fire,Tolkien and the Warhammer universe. Hence my attempts at regenerating it ![]() The Imperial march is amazing, don't forget John Williams also composed the score to the best films on earth. JURASSIC PARK. |

There is plenty of good fantasy out there today. Fantasy is basically anything weird that is not shiny enough to be Science Fiction. Temeraire is fantasy and about intelligent Dragons fighting in the Napoleonic Wars is about as far from elves and dwarves dicking about as you can get. A Song of Ice and Fire is also well worth a look, everyone is human and there isn't really any ultimate evil, just varying degrees of arseholes. The Imperial March is too grand for the Nazis. It's ideal for them to steal but not for them to come up with. Nazis stole all their good music from Prussia and the German Empire. Speaking of the March, this is probably my favourite moment in the Clones Wars TV series. I wish the prequels had been all about the start of Vader, it feels tacked on to them as it is. |

The other thing which pissed me off was the fact that George Lucas tried to shoehorn in all of the characters from the old trilogy into the prequels. We did not need to see where Chewbacca or C3PO came from. |

The Chewbacca origin is something I can tolerate and understand. However, C3PO should have been completely left out of the prequels. How could a 9 year old slave construct a fairly intelligent bipedal robot? Though if I had to choose to make one change in the prequels (particularly "Phantom Menace"), it would not be this. I've got three words for what I would change: Jar Jar Binks. Either eliminate him completely or make him much less annoying. One suggestion I saw in a topic (focused on making "The Phantom Menace" better) on an alternate history forum I joined that it would be good to make Jar Jar's species an oppressed race on Naboo. Jar Jar would be the strong Frederick Douglas-like character working to deliver his people from oppression via diplomacy and politics. Thus, he would travel with Qui Gon Jinn and Obi Wan Kenobi to Coruscant to try to convince the Jedi Council to help his people overcome the Gungan's Human overlords. |

I don't think he constructed 3PO from scratch, but rather from parts that were just lying around. All he did was put them together and perhaps do a bit of programming. |

Still, I'm dubious as to how he could do that! I mean, yes, he worked in a junk shop and probably learned how to repair robots. But I doubt this his master (whose name escapes me) would have given him the knowledge to build C3PO, whether from scratch or from spare parts. |

If I were to change the Phantom Menace I would have cut out a young Anakin, we did not need to see that. He should largely be a background character, instead focus on the bond between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. I wanted to see what the Jedi were truly like in their heyday. I think later on in the prequels they should have focused far more on just Anakin and Obi-Wan, their friendship and how it collapsed. It should show the emotional turmoil of both characters, the clone wars should have been a back drop. The only redeeming scenes of the trilogy is when Order 66 is carried out. That was awesome. |

From what I know, C3PO is a protocol droid, you see others elsewhere so Anakin probably just found a broken one and rebuilt it. Order 66 felt very odd to me, I've been watching the Clone Wars and for the most part the Jedi and the Clones get one well, then one order from Palpatine and almost all of them immediately shoot their friends in the back. I know their clones bred for obedience but it still seems odd that Cody didn't even flinch before trying to kill Obi Wan. In some ways the Clone Wars series feels like an apology for the prequels. It's all the good stuff from them combined, lots of Obi Wan and Anakin working together. Even the bits with Jar Jar are pretty good. Edited by lamna, Mar 31 2012, 06:34 PM.

Fair enough. Though what I pointed out about the Sith and Jedi philosophies is still valid, and shows that Star Wars is not quite as black and white as just "good vs evil".
I think Star Wars is actually set in a fictional universe. That's kinda like what you get with many fantasy settings, where it is set in some fictional world where there's humans living with magic and legendary creatures. The only real difference here is that the fictional universe of Star Wars features high-tech and aliens, rather than elves and dragons. I think its a bit of a stereotype how sci-fi is always labelled as stuff in our future, and fantasy as fictitious medieval worlds. One of the great things about Star Wars is that it doesn't conform to such stereotypes. |
