| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Considering the fact that all the actors are humans and natives of planet Earth, its not really surprising that they would have Earth accents. I mean, sure it would be more believable to come up with accents unlike anything from this planet, but how would that be pulled off? Its a lot simpler to just have Earth accents stand in for the fictional accents of fictional worlds.
Considering the fact that they are hermaphrodites, its hard to see how there could even be any "anti-gay subtext". I personally think that Faa's accusation is little more than a reversed version of accusations by Christian fundamentalist bigots who claim that various movies and TV shows are "turning our kids gay". Just as the fundies see "gayness" where there is none, Faa seems to see homophobia where there is none. As for Hutts identifying themselves as male or female, this may actually be merely a case of non-Hutt characters ascribing male or female features to them. So while such characters may refer to Jabba and Ziro as "he", that doesn't necessarily mean Jabba and Ziro see themselves as this.
Outside of the movies, the Star Wars setting actually goes into more detail on the Force, on the Jedi and Sith philosophies and on more grey areas. Basically, the whole Jedi and Sith thing is not just all about "good vs evil". The Sith actually don't see themselves as evil, but rather believe that the strong deserve rule the weak and that it is OK to get what you want through malicious means. Kinda like a "survival of the fittest" doctrine taken to extreme lengths. The Jedi on the other hand believe strongly in the value of altruism and feel that their power should be used to help others rather than just serving oneself. Considering the significant differences in their views, its little wonder the Jedi and the Sith are not the best of friends. |

Actually, Hutts literally change genders. For example, Jabba was a female at one time. (Also, Ziro is SUPPOSED to be annoying.) |

I think it can be pulled off. The Na'vi accent in Avatar didn't seem to be based off of any existing accent, but it lapsed into being sortof 'generic' or having a different interpretation from every single actor. That said, basing off of existing accents is way easier. Problem is, now you have people complaining that your villains that used Croatian accents were a racist stereotype.
Hermaphrodites, but portrayed (usually) as male. An uninformed viewer probably wouldn't even realise that they're supposed to be hermaphrodites; the portrayal is what matters.
Fair enough, but I find it pretty odd. People of either gender can be varyingly feminine or masculine in various different ways. And if you go outside our species gender stereotypes are bound to differ. It's almost kind of like an imperialistic statement- repeatedly ascribing a value to someone who does not want it.
We're not talking about the EU here though, mostly the films. |

I think the films actually make far more sense (ignoring the Jedi shit) if you imagine that humans arrived millenia ago into the star wars galaxy and terraformed alot of the worlds, and then the humans also began to adapt. Leaving the thousands of humanoid races etc. and perhaps the purestrain humans existing on the more civilized and ancient worlds. As nearly all of the species breathe the same atmosphere, have the same biochemistry etc. There must be a common ancestor. |

Good theory, except it takes place in the past... I think the "humans" are just supposed to be human-like aliens. |

And rats don't build ships, but they're an invasive species in New Zealand. Perhaps another species transported humans to the Star Wars galaxy. Edited by T.Neo, Mar 31 2012, 08:28 AM.
