History: In 2016, India launched their first manned mission into space. Due to the success of this mission, in 2017 they launched another manned mission, this time to the ISS. However, this mission would be the worst space accident since the Columbia Disaster. A malfunctioning fuel tank blew up in mid flight, exploding and killing everyone aboard. The resulting explosion would prevent India from launching another rocket for a good amount of time. In 2020, America sent a man on the moon again, however. In 2023, the Russians also sent a man to the moon. In 2025, the Indian Space Research Organisation is planning a colony on a recently discovered planet, 30 light years away, many other countries are planning a colony there too, seeing what is happening to the Earth. In 2050, the world is being wrecked by global warming. Sea levels have risen. Coastal cities are flooded. Small pox was accidentally unleashed, after some samples in an American lab were about to be destroyed, instead of being destroyed, the samples were dropped on the floor and unleashed to the outside world. Since vaccines for small pox were no longer being administered since the virus was thought to be extinct, most of the population was killed off. The survivors board the ships that will be sent to this planet. The survivors are placed in stasis. Also aboard the ships is the genetic information of important food crops and important domestic animals, for cloning. The ships are travelling at 10% speed of light. 300 years later, the fleet, consisting of a ship built by america, a ship built by india, and a ship built by russia, arrive. However, before awakening the crew, one of the ships sends out a probe, and it returns the following data:

Atmospheric composition:
70% Nitrogen
23% Oxygen
3% Water vapor
0.88% Argon
0.390% carbon dioxide
Trace other gases

Crust composition:
35.3% iron
22.6% silicon
22.5% oxygen
10.7% nickel
8.8% other metals
trace other elements

Misc stats:
Land Area: 8.32 x 107 km2 (0.56 x earth)
Mass: 1.78 x 1025 kg (2.98 x earth)
Density: 5.63 g/cm3 (1.02 x earth)
Surface area: 1.04 x 109 km2
Radius: 9099.55 km (1.43 x earth)
Star is G-Type main sequence star
Gravity is higher than Earth's

Near the landing site is a group of small green structures. Upon inspection they are like a cactus, the entire plant is photosynthetic. The roots are actually a mycelium, thus it is more like a fungus. The photosynthetic plant is actually a fruiting body. Infact, the fruiting bodies discovered in the area are all from the same mycelium. This group of organisms will be called Plantfungidae (I will think of a better name later.).

I used the world generator suggested in the world building resources to get some of the stats and the map.

The probe, after discovering the new organism, processes the sample.

The organism's biochemistry is the same as earthly organisms, in that it's carbon based, and uses water as a solvent.

However the DNA's configuration is different then earthly organisms, it uses quintuplicate form DNA. ( http://thomastapir.deviantart.com/art/Alternative-Biochemistries-WIP-129132049 )

I love reading the WIP biochemical alternatives, also, how do you think the crops and domestic animals brought by humans could affect the natural biosphere of your planet?

They could get loose and outcompete native animals, but for now, the DNA is kept on the ship, the probe's purpose is to analyze the planet's animals, plants and microbes and to find a spot for colonization.

The probe, after analyzing the lifeform, it's DNA is sent to the ship for research. The probe heads towards some tree looking plants. These trees, like the smaller plants, it's roots are a mycelium, and these trees are fruting bodies of a photosynthetic fungus. However these trees are made of stiffer fibers, to prevent toppling over. The mycelium of this fungus is also stiffer, like roots of a tree on Earth.

Ok,so what if the colonist set their first colony in an island, and then start to move to a continent after the population on the planet rise. I think they should start by colonise islands because they will probably be devoid of large predators, and will probably allow the colonist to interact better with the new enviroment. This was the problem the colonist from James Cameron's Avatar, and Terra Nova had during the colonization of their worlds. Also the settlers could save resources, which would have been spent protecting themselves from predators, and reduce the risk of losing any colonist.

The world has alot of islands, if you saw the map.

Oh I didn't saw the mapa.

Well, do you have another idea for a group of organisms that live on your planet along Plantfungidae? if not, I could help you develop some ideas for your native organisms.

Love the back story it seems plausible for the most part. However I think you are a little too optimistic with your dates. Perhaps 2100 would work better?

I'm trying to think of an idea for an organism right now.

The probe, after registering the organism in it's database, it heads off into the Plantfungus forest. A gorilla like organism is spotted, eating bark off of a Funguswood Tree. The organism turns it's head towards the direction of the probe, and begins inflating sacks on it's back with methane. In the sacks, there are methane producing bacteria. The sacks light up firey red, and the organism charges at the probe. The organism sees the probe as a threat.

Spoiler: click to toggle

It has ears on the side of it's head, like alot of vertebrates, but it also has antennae, and a pair of nostrils. These antennae are used to detect odors from far away, while the nostrils are used to detect odors closer up. Like mammals, it can breathe through it's nostrils and it's mouth. Also these organisms are migratory, and the antenna are used as a sun compass, like a monarch butterfly, while migrating. They migrate during the winter to the parts of the continent closer to the equator, to find more food, during the winter in the areas closer to the poles, the Fungus Trees go dormant, and the Fungus Trees are a food source to many organisms, and since these organisms are omnivores, they must move to warmer areas to find Fungus Trees and other animals to eat. It's crest is used to attract mates, males are purple, like the one shown in the picture, and females are dull brown, sometimes yellow. The fungus trees, unlike the smaller green fungus plants, have leaves. The barks are tougher and not usually eaten by animals, except organisms such as the gorilla like animal pictured, but even they rarely eat it, since it is hard to digest. The gorilla like animal's methane sacks are used to startle off rivals, predators; and also attract mates. Females also have smaller methane sacks and lack a crest.

Also, I can't think of a name for the gorilla like animal. Can someone think of a name for it?

Nice creature design!

A name for the creature could be something like Ucorosuchus? S)

The probe, seeing the organism charge at it, the probe flees into the air. Suddenly, the haunting echoes of a blood curdling scream are heard, and the organism heads towards the direction of the scream. The probe, while following the organism, picks up something. The carbon dioxide, methane and oxygen levels are higher than what was detected, thus the probe may have had an error when processing the information. The probe also detects the temperature on the surface, at it's highest is 129 degrees Fahrenheit, and the lowest is 40 degrees Farenheit. The Fungus Trees go dormant at 60 degrees. The probe, arrives at a gruesome scene. An alien warrior, holding a sword like weapon and a shield made of iron, is trying to kill the alpha Eocurosouchus. Their race had figured out that the methane sacks are flammable. One of the warriors puts his torch towards the Eoucorosuchus' methane sacks. The methane sacks catch on fire and explode. Amber yellow blood comes pouring out of the methane sacks. The Eocuorosuchus, enraged, tries to attack the warrior, but it is being weakened by blood loss. The Eocurosuchus manages to slash one of the warrior's faces, then it falls to the ground, dead. The Ucorosuchus look up towards the probe in fear. The warriors flee, not even picking up the corpse like they usually do when they attack Eocurosuchus, considering they eat them, and use their blood as a food item.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Btw, the Eoucorosuchus has an average I.Q of 100 (the first animal species I did a picture of in the topic), and the Ucorosuchus (the species in the picture posted in this post's spoiler) has an average I.Q of 125. However, the Eoucorosuchus is not civilized, and the Ucorosuchus is. The major difference is Ucorosuchus is bipedial and Eoucorosuchus is a quadrepedal knuckle walker. However, Ucorosuchus is Ecoucorosuchus' ancestor, and all other species that evolved from Eoucorosuchus died off but Ucorosuchus. Also, Ucorosuchus technology is at maximum classical greek technology. However, most animals on the planet have cobalt based blood. However, some have iron based blood. The animals that have cobalt based blood recycle their blood faster and more efficently, to make up for the fact it dosen't last long. Ucorosuchus also don't have sexual dimorphism.

Nice, but the appearance of a xenosophont life form only complicate things for the colonists if your Eoucorosuchus is very territorial. Also can the colonist eat any indigenous food?, and if not what are the effects on the colonists?

Alot of organims on the planet have cobalt based blood, and humans only use cobalt for Vitamin B12, so they may get cobalt poisoning. However, I don't know how much cobalt an organism on this planet would contain, since no organism on earth has cobalt based blood, so I'm just assuming that a human might get cobalt poisoning. However, the plantfungidae are edible to humans, and the group of animals on this planet called Octopods are edible, since they have iron based blood. However, they are the equivalent of mice, insects and other small animals. They have eight legs, and some of them have 6 legs and two wings. The octopods do not breathe the same way an earthly insect breathes, instead they breathe more like a vertebrate. The only animals on this planet that have an exoskeleton live in the ocean. There are also animals with endoskeletons in the ocean.

What is the technology level of the colonist in New Earth? Also could you show some images about the groups of organisms you mentioned in the previous post :D ?
