Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Anyone seen the paleo-reconstructions by Pixel Shack? They are quite an interesting and often almost photorealistic depiction of paleolife, but are marred by such maladies (described by TvTropes) as "obvious 2D skin patterns layered on top of its otherwise 3 dimensional-looking body, with at times uncomfortably bent limbs, oversized heads, and a creepily derpy expressions." Oh, and let's not forget the fact that they sometimes appear to float off the ground a bit.

So, here's a drunk hypsilophodont:

And here's a Mussasaurus, clearly really enjoying... whatever the green stuff is that it's eating.
Spoiler: click to toggle

And here in South Africa, 'local is lekker', so here's an image of Massospondylus, who appears to be saying "Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Duuuuuuuuude";
Spoiler: click to toggle

And here's Stagonolepis, which according to the guys at Pixel Shack, was the Triassic equivalent of a shady back-alley drug dealer;
Spoiler: click to toggle

Here's Ankylosaurus, "Oh Hi";
Spoiler: click to toggle

The recently discovered species of Gondwanan dinosaur, Muttaburrasaurus derpensis;
Spoiler: click to toggle

And apparently the fiersome Tarbosaurus, in actuality, looked like a gigantic carnivorous transvestite;

Sad Triceratops is sad: :(
Spoiler: click to toggle

Undeniable proof that Pachyrhinosaurus resembled some of the teachers I had in elementary school:

Then there's Protoceratops. Run little Protoceratops, run! Run like the wind! Or else a pack of Derpiraptor antirropus will eat you alive!
Spoiler: click to toggle

And the very first Derpbird! Archaeopteryx... and anatomically incorrect to boot!
Spoiler: click to toggle

And would you believe it, these guys actually managed to make a derpy EURYPTERID. That's right folks. Even these awesome creatures can fall prey to the dreaded derp-itis.

This Acrocanthasaurus appears to have been recently hit on the head with a rock:

And my personal favourite, the asian tyrannosaurid, Alioramus Derpcephalus remotus!

2D skin patterns? I wasn't aware something flat like skin could be three dimensional...
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

I've got the book.
Probably the most complete dinosaur book Ive got aimed for kids, but yeah, I didnt like the artwork due to that strange...thing about them. There okay though.
"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!"

I wasn't aware that quarks were flat*.

*I know full well they're three dimensional. I'm mocking Parasky's incredibly derpy comment.

skin is 3D - when it folds and creases - it does so in all 3 dimensions, and probably in 4...

when a simple tiled texture map is applied to a 3D "mesh", it stretches and warps and can become pixelated if stretched and warped too far.... I think that's what T. Neo is referring to...

Is that muttaburrasaur different than the one in my book "Kadimakera" which I bought nearly 30 years ago?

If any Aussies are interested, ABC Sunday Night, 7:30, have a documentary about Australian paleo-zoology. For you others un-Antipodeans - they might have it online - I don't know - as for whether ABC (like Australia's version of the BBC, with lots of BBC shows) block Internet visitors from outside of Australia view it - I don't know.

Nope, I looked it up on ABC's website.

To be honest I'd prefer to see Once Upon Australia again.
