| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Hey, our winters may be pissweak. but your summers are just as pitiful. I was in london for a month, I dont remember the sun ever being actually visible, let alone clear skies (has anyone in the UK ever seen a clear sky?). it was July. |

I hate alarmist climate change bull. I don't necessarily discount global climate change or warming or whatever the hell it's called now, but I don't really buy into it either. I don't think we have anywhere close to enough data on something as vast and ancient as the atmosphere to go making any kind of claim, let alone the radical "we'll destroy Earth!" one. Nuclear power plants were supposed to do the same thing, but France uses a lot of them and they don't seem to have much trouble. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

I agree. The alarmist stuff is bull, but I'm not very skeptical of the phenomenon itself- the chemistry of it is pretty clear, so it isn't very difficult to believe that human activities are having an effect on the global climate. The severity of that effect and how it correlates to human activities can be righly regarded as a matter of contention, as our knowledge changes and improves. But people just spin it into this alarmist nonsense. Some do it as an advertising thing, some do it as a political platform, and I think some do it because they just plain hate humans.
The problems that can occur with nuclear power are far more subtle though. It's more an issue of improper safety practices, practical concerns, low-level radiation leaks, etc. |

We know enough. CO2 is an insulator, we are releasing a lot of CO2 into the atmosphere, and the planet is getting warmer. At the end of the day, those are the facts and politicians arguing will either lead to nothing being done, or an uncoordinated, half-arsed response. |

We also know that the vast majority of the land and water on our planet is covered in lifeforms constantly turning that CO2 back into O2. Yet nobody seems to care, because as we all know CO2 levels only go up not down. Plants don't want to breathe car exhaust apparently. |

Plants breathe Oxygen, like us. They eat CO2. Now notice that CO is in car exhaust. We're choking the plants. |

Dogs eat meat, but if you pile up more carcasses than one can eat they are going to accumulate. People are measuring the composition of the atmosphere? It might not be as sexy as geology but people do check that. |

Let's not forget that we're putting carbon back into the cycle that was locked away for a rather long time as well as harvesting the plants that would normally take full advantage of this sudden increase of carbon supply. I don't know the actual rate of harvest but I imagine it it at a great enough scale that the population is not able to fully harness the larger supply. |
