| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. OK, so there's this idea for a book I've been thinking about for quite some time now. It would basically be a history and analysis of the so-called Animation Age Ghetto. The premise would be that animated films aimed at audiences other than children can be successful, and that the reason we don't see more of them is because of cultural stereotypes, not a lack of trying. Both anime and Western animation would be covered, and there be chapters on, among other things, the rise of adult animated comedies in the 1990s, the failures of the likes of Atlantis, Treasure Planet and Titan AE, and the works of Ralph Bakshi and Martin Rosen. I've even thought of a title: The Animation Heresies. Does this sound at all interesting? |

I personally would not read it, though that doesn't mean that someone else wouldn't. While I do consider myself a cinephile, I don't really care for most animation. But it would be an interesting book for those that actually follow it. |

I like the sound of it.... however - whilte I probably wouldn't buy it... I'd certainly borrow it from my library... I love the earlier works of Ralph Bakshi, i.e. Fritz The Cat, and Wizards. LOTR was a big disappoinment however, but in hindsight, no better or worse than the Peter Jackson live action treatment. The "stereotype" of cartoons being for Children is pretty much an Anglo-Saxon Western thing - but even Canada treats animation more seriously than the USA or Australia. In France and Japan, its treated as a legitimate cinema art form for all ages. I can't believe the number of parents I know who let small children watch South Park being completely ignorant of the serious and sometimes disturbing subject matter - "oh it's just a kids cartoon"... morons... I did not let my daughters watch it till they were about 12 or so, and even that was probably too young. |

I'd like to end this before it begins: We already have a topic (a mercifully dead one, though) that consisted of little more than posters arguing over what they considered to be the greatest flaw in the animation industry. To avoid repeating that, I would prefer feedback focus on the book idea itself rather than its subject matter as a whole. |

I would totally buy the book. Even though I know very well about the history of animation, it would deserve to be bought. |

Same as magoo. I would not really buy it but would probably read it from a library. About sSouth Park, my dad doesn't let me watch it, but my 10yr old friend's mum does..... I do agree that underestimating animations can lead to some problems. Oh wait, just read squibs post.... Whatever, defenetly read if got chance, but would not exactly purchase. |

"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!" | |

So, any recommendations on what you think ought to be included in a book like this? |

Sorry to necro-post, but I now have the outline of this book available. It's a shame JohnFaa isn't around to see it anymore. |
