Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I simply can't help but feel the entire plot to culminate in a "humanity will win because OMG SPACE UNICORNS WE WIN" ending.

It would fit with Mass Effect's origins. It draws a lot of inspiration from Babylon 5.

Maybe a new force being exploited in the galaxy? From what we've seen, each Reaper will be killed in a different way though.

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

I reckon a pretty big choice which affects the game is whether you spared the Rachni Queen, (I did! :D like any good Speccer should..) they will definitely come to aid us. And perhaps their fleet may help turn the tide.

The Quarians are a damn sight powerful, Rachni, perhaps curing the Genophage helps? Geth cannot be forgotten.

AWESOME IDEA!!!! THERE IS AN EXACT OPPOSITE TO THE REAPERS. A BIOLOGICAL HORDE BENT ON CONSUMPTION. LEAD BY CTHULU... NERDGASM 2.5 REACHED.

While I agree that the rachni will hopefully play a big role, I simply can't see how the quarians will be all that significant. Their fleet is mostly lifeships. They're built to travel the galaxy and gather resources. They aren't really militaristic. One of the quarians (forgot which) even confirms that during Tali's trial, when he said that the quarians have a pretty poor military.

The geth hopefully will be pretty strong, and I wonder how your decision during Legion's loyalty mission will affect things.

And I want to see some hanar again. :(

I don't think saving the Rachni will be a major thing, they have only had a few years to go from a population of one.

I'm guessing that there is going to be a major naval engagement and your choices will effect who ends up surviving, much like upgrading the Normandy and getting loyalty in ME2 effects who survive the final mission.

Or maybe it will happen gradually, picking off your team unless you performed certain actions to remove threats or provide reinforcements. That would keep it interesting, if you still get screwed whether you pick Paragon or Crazy Asshole options.

EDIT:
The Quarians have a decent military, and a massive fleet. They just can't retake their homeworld by force.

The Quarians would probably be vital in providing warm bodies on ships. The percentage of humans in the military is far lower than other species, and after Eden Prime enlistment takes a heavy blow. Combine that with having to replace losses sustained in a war against a technologically superior foe and no sane person would turn down people who've pretty much been training their whole life to be in the navy.

In-game I doubt that would come up, but in reality they would be quite handy.

And if things get as bad as they might, the Quarians are already on the run. The Flotilla might end up the last functioning government.

Just for reference: The quarian flotilla houses ~17 million quarians. That's not even 1/4th of the population of germany in present times.

I'd wager that a reaper could annihilate the quarian fleet while texting and drunk.

Indeed, but space is very, very big. Both in real life and in-universe, stuff in the void is hard to find.

I suspect that bar any massive catastrophe that they will lose the lowest percentage of non-combatants of any species.

And it shan't be Cthulu who saves us, it will be Admiral Harrington and 8th Fleet. She'd kill the Reapers dead from 15 million kilometers, if she feels like getting close.

Oh yeah, right. The reapers focus on planets. I guess the quarians do have a pretty good chance at surviving the harvest, but they still wouldn't really make a dent in the reaper army, should they decide to join the war.

Vigil did not say the protheans were the only species around at the time, though the fact he did not mention any means they were probably not important.

I can't really quote vigil, because I don't remember the conversation word for word, but I'm pretty sure that he said or at least implied that the protheans were the only sapient species during their time.

Edit: I am not sure how far a wiki qualifies as a source, but it seems to agree with me.

First paragraph:
Quote:

The Protheans are an extinct alien race which mysteriously vanished over 50,000 years ago. The only known space-faring species of their time, the Protheans arose from a single planet and developed an immense galaxy-wide empire. Not much is known about them, but many of their artifacts, ruins and technology have apparently survived the ages.

I just recently played though Mass Effect, he made no mention of other species, but he never said the Protheans were the only species around at the time. This was only a few days ago, but my memory is only good when it comes to irrelevant stuff.

For all we know "Prothean" is more vague and inclusive than "Roman" or "Han", and they accepted other species into their empire. We'll probably never know.

The flotilla certainly provides orbital support at one point.

The rachni can reproduce damn fast- perhaps the "biological starship wheee" trope will be used and they'll grow a fleet in a few days.

Perhaps Shepard wins by making his own Reapers. That'd be dumb.

I don't think they can reproduce that fast, all we hear about in ME2 are scout ships. And there is no reason to think their technology is biological, indeed the fact that they need and agent suggests to me it isn't.

Well, the absence of infantry technology etc. leaves them looking like possible biotechies.

And of course, it doesn't have to be fully biological.

Ah but the rachni we see in ME are simply feral, for all we know they could have guns and advanced tech. Also they were very close to destroying much of Citadel space before the Krogan showed up.

Im guessing one of the missions will be persuading the Quarians to join the fight, I presume otherwise they are quite content to hide in space. Perhaps making a treaty between geth and quarians?

Dial covered it, the Rachni on Noveria are insane, feral. They don't represent their species.

I assume that you convince the Geth to leave Rannoch. The Geth will likely have no problem with it. They have no interesting in the planet, and have been rebuilding and decontaminating since they won the war. Presumably you broker a peace, which means the Quarians can get all the non-combatants off their warships and will show you are helpful to the Geth.

Also I just reactivated Legion in ME2. Does anyone think it was a really bad idea to do it in EDI's AI Core?
