Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

You know how some people wish they could whistle, but only because they're too stupid to figure out what 'purse lips, push tounge foward' means?

Well what about the things that actually are hard to do?

I would like to be able to do the Predator click and roll my 'R's like a Scotman. I have no interest in rolling them like a Spaniard however.

I would like to someday learn how to swim. Be fluent in French too.

Is this practical, reasonable things? In that case, learn Dutch or Danish. I don't really mind which, they are both flat, Germanic, constitutional monarchies on the North Sea that have treated their overseas territories correctly.

If it's anything, American Reconquista.

I want a pet crow. It's like having a pet monkey, except more awesome. Because some of them can cause toads to explode.

You know how some people wish they could do predator clicks and roll their 'R'rs like a Scotsman, but only because they're too stupid to figure out what 'press the back of your tongue against your uvula or the tip of your tongue against the alveolar ridge and force air out through your mouth at such a speed that the articulators in question vibrate' means?

Well what about the things that actually are hard to do?

I would like to be able to whistle. No seriously, I can do those other things, but I can't whistle. However, I don't really want to whistle that badly, so I don't make an effort, so I guess it doesn't count. I'd like to time travel, teleport, and never die.

If I could do things that I can't do now but that humans can do, I would like to have a better memory and to be able to get money from people.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Whistling is fucking simple. My uvuala is at the very, very back of my throat, because I'm a mutant like that, so I can't do the Predator click, and what the hell is an alveolar ridge? Use vernacular, like soft pallete.

EDIT: I just remembered something. I WANT TO YODEL.

Apparently not. I can produce practically every phoneme known to man, from the velar lateral affricate to the velar ingressive trill, the linguolabial lingual egressivee to the voiced uvular implosive. But I can't fucking whistle.

Number 5 on this diagram is the edge alveolar ridge, but 4 the apex of it, where you (probably) press your tongue in the t sound (unless you're russian or from new york or something, in which case it might be 3. Or if you're indian, then it's 6). Press your tongue against 4 and trill it (like making a machine gun sound). Try not to raise your tongue too much, just press the tip of the tongue up, not the whole tongue. That should be the stereotypical scottish trill.

However, actual scottish people pronounce it as a flap apparently, which means the <tt> sound in (what is probably your pronunciation of) "better". So, take a word with an intervocalic <r>, the only one coming to mind at the moment being "irreversible", and imagine it with the <r> replaced with <t> or <d>, and say it like that, "iddeversible". That should be quite similar to the scottish r, though typically rhotic flaps are lateral, but wikipedia doesn't specify whether it is or not, so I'm not going to go through the trouble of explaining how to do that.

I tried. My tounge refuses to trill. All it does is blow air out and make me hiss.

Some voodoo magics involved in this, Suh.

All it requires is more pulmonic airflow and a stronger tongue. Americans tend to force out less air than other languages due to a high number of sonorants. Also, speaking a language lacking in trills means you haven't developed the muscles required as well.

I think the problem is you're thinking about it as a trill. You don't consciously move the tongue, the air being forced out does that. Try putting your tongue in the [t] position, and hold it there strongly. Then force the air into your mouth until the pressure builds up so much that your tongue is forced away from the alveolar ridge, but use your strength to try and keep it connected to the ridge. The conflicting forces of you trying to maintain the [t] position and the air trying to dislodge your tongue from the [t] position will cause your tongue to vibrate against the alveolar ridge, making a trill. If it helps, imagine goku going ssj3. It helps whenever I need to do something that requires little strength in relation to others but a lot in relation to me.
