Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Well not every war. But as far as I can can tell, either your nation is scattered to the winds, or you recover in a generation. There does not seem to be much of a middle ground when your population is reduced by a fair amount for a while.

There is the possibility you were just trying to make a joke, but we never take that chance with you.

No I wasnt trying to make a joke, I was generalising about the winners of wars (if someone posts some crap like there are no winners in war, please keep it to yourself). Fakeys not talking about utter annhilation as thats hardly population control.

The notion that war is good for keeping the population down is plain stupid.

Oh, it is if I can manage to get my hands on some nukes and a fuckload of mearcenaries. Just aim them at areas with high populations and nuclear reactors. The world governement can easily cover it up, and then while they send troops the help take care of the aftermath, the mercs can swoop in and take hold of the capitals in one organized strike.

Or even better, skip the nukes and shut down satellites one by one and send them hurtling to the planet, right into the reactors. Thus, communications will be cut, and the troops will be sent to the impact sites. I could make it look like one country attacking another. Yes. YES! That will be perfect. Then I can step in and take down nations. The small ones at first, but I'll work my way up to the big players, like China, Britain, and the U.S.

YES! The world shall fall to chaos and declare me the leader of the human race! Then we can begin the Uplift, and let all other apes share in our glorious dominance.

But then again, I'm lazy, so I'll just write this as a fanfic some time in the future.

Hey fakey, do you watch dragon ball z? I just noticed you remind me a lot of majin buu. All the other villains have some rhyme or reason to their destruction; frieza being a spoiled brat hungry for power, garlic jr trying to bring the demons out of the underworld for equal rights or something like that (I wasn't paying much attention, it was a filler saga), the androids and cell being programmed to kill goku to exact revenge for the downfall of the red ribbon army, though afterwards cell developed a god complex and decided to destroy everything simply because he was perfect and nothing else was.

Majin buu on the other hand was just crazy and liked blowing shit up. You know the funny thing? He was the only one to actually succeed in killing everybody.

How did a thread about the new year turn into a thread about war? <_<

And on your nuclear program.

By discussing what might happen next year, which will involve various wars and it followed on from there. Unless that was a rhetorical question, in which case "That's our Fakey!" cue canned laughter.

Russia only gets involved in the "Near abroad" and China just stays at home. Neither has much ability for power projection, and they traditionally have not done much either. All they would do is whine from the sidelines, same as they did in Libya.

I don't think it's a matter of time before a major war. I think that is fairly unlikely to happen, the Syrians and Egyptians know what's at stake. In the last big war the Israelis were almost in Cairo and Damascus. The peace has been very good for Egypt, they are unlikely to abandon it without very good reason and Assad might be a bastard, but he is no idiot.

Islamofascist is a stupid word made up by nationalist twats. The word is Islamist, and there is no threat of that happening. Turkey is very strong. They could crush Syria and more than hold their own against Iran. Only the USA has a larger army in NATO, they have the third largest air force and a large and capable navy.

This is Turkey's time to rise again, and there is a chance that a dangerous form of nationalism and militarism will take hold. But the idea of Islamists taking over is about as plausible as fundamentalist Christians taking over the USA. If anyone threatens the secular nature of Turkey, the army will stage a coup.

Russia might get involved, they've expressed interest in the Middle East several times before. And recently they've been doing business with Iran, though they don't particularly seem any more pleased with the government than anyone else right now. I'm not quite sure what Russia's current investments in the Middle East are, though I doubt they're substantial enough to warrant anything more than threats and sanctions. China? I just don't see it. They seem more interested in Africa than anything. They're not going to get anywhere fast with their current system of "business savvy communism" though. I laugh in the face of their five-year space program they have planned. Chinese on the moon? Don't make me laugh, I bet they won't make it past the Clarke Belt before they run out of money. Or taikonauts.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

The reason Russia is so miffed about the Arab spring is that their traditional middle eastern allies are Libya and Syria. Most of the rest is in the US/Western sphere.

The don't really like the Iranians that much, but their willing to work with them, while neither Iran nor the west want to go there. China does not have many issues with doing business with dodgy regimes, that's how they got into Africa. While Europe and America were decrying dictators, China slipped in.

It's far older than just five years, and they don't seem to be at risk of running out of money or crew members.

They're just doing now what the US and the USSR did in the 1960s and 1970s- at a pretty slow pace.

But don't laugh, by doing that they are actually doing more than the US space program right now. Currently NASA is stifled by nonsensical goals written by politicians solely to serve specific districts and private entities.

GEO doesn't make much sense for a manned mission anyway, it's just empty space.

I was referring in fact to the recent five year plan their space agency released to the media a few days ago.
