Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I had a dream last night about Venus. Apparently, everyone was wrong about Venus, and the clouds conceal a habitable surface. If I remember correctly, part of the surface was covered in weird 'fern-y' rainforests, other parts were desolate gravel beds. But the most interesting part of the dream involved the oceans of the planet.

The seafloor was also quite rocky and gravelly, and was covered in a weird translucent 'seaweed' of some kind. Most of the organisms seen were cephalopod-esque, but inhabited niches more similar to fish on Earth. There were indications that there were other creatures in the sea, 'fish'- eventually I sighted one, a 'shark'- eel-like, slowly swimming by undulating its entire body. It had very odd gills, wavy or s-shaped on the side of its 'neck'.

The really odd part was afterwards, there was some kind of conference between various SE members (represented by holograms, like in Star Wars) discussing these Venusian organisms. One of the questions was why an alien animal would look so similar to something from Earth. Parasky stated that external resemblance does not necessarily imply a similar overall morphology.

Later on, back on Earth, I asked someone how everyone had been wrong about Venus, after decades of spectral observation, orbital and even surface probes, why people would postulate that it is habitable. They replied "er... they just don't know". Confusing.

Earth felt a bit weird in the dream, too.
A hard mathematical figure provides a sort of enlightenment to one's understanding of an idea that is never matched by mere guesswork.

I wish I had dreams like that. All I get in my sleep are dreams about me accidentally destroying the world with radioactive icebergs :( :/

I had two dreams involving gas giants. I had one where I fell into a gas giant and burned to death, and another where I was on a gas giant with a very watery atmosphere and was swimming along fish like animals, and I was in a structure that appeared similar to my own room. I also had a dream where I was on Earth 5 billion years from now, and when the sun swallowed the Earth, I got cooked alive.

Last night I had a dream where life on Earth died, except for a gentically engineered wheat cell with tardigrade genes. The wheat cells would form colored clumps visible to the naked eye, which these clumps would come in blue, yellow, green or white.

Last night I had a dream I was a Gapuri swinging through trees. It was awesome. I didn't feel the low gravity, but I had a tail and four arms!

@Arachnus that has got to be the most amazing dream ever.

I dreamt of a giant worm like creature rearing up in front of me. It had this fleshy visceral covering on it that was like a hooded cloak. It had a bunch of skinny arms peeking out though the cloak, which extended to the ground. It had this some long antennae with biolights on the tip sticking out of its chest. It had a headdress with symbols on it and it held a long piece of cloth. All in all, it was slightly similar to the sophont at the end of All Tomorrow's. I think I drew it out, and now it's on my dA somewhere...

And then there was this creature that looked like a giant insect, but covered in pale skin, and with thicker legs. It's head was on a long neck like structure that extended from its chest.

Last night I dreamt where there were animals on Nu in my project that resembled a mixture of avian and reptile, they were octopodal, had a green body with red stripes covering the wings, and could swing from trees using their feet.

I think I forced myself to dream about this, since I was thinking of something like this before I fell asleep, then, when I fell asleep, I dreamt about it.

Spoiler: click to toggle

This is my best attempt at making it.

Also they flew like pterosaurs, but, had an avian like stance when on the ground or on a branch.

Mod edit: high resolution image spoilered.

I envy you. I used to have more creative dreams, but my dreams started getting more random and meaningless starting a few months ago.

I had a dream where I bought eggs for ostritches that could change color when they ate certain foods. When they ate yellow grains, they turned yellow. When they ate white grains, they turned white.

I remember creatures in a dream last night... I can't remember what they were though.

Why do you have such detailed, complex dream-worlds?
Dumb Quotes

Coming Soon/To be Rebooted:

How To Hunt Gods - Everything you need to know about Gods and the art of God-killing.

Intrazoology - The world of semi-corporeal lifeforms. A world you walk through every day, without even knowing it.

The Dungeonverse - Magical creatures forced to adapt in huge, underground caverns, while surface-dwelling humans go dungeoneering for treasure.

Crossover - A mish-mash of worlds, with Earth smack in the middle of the chaos. What could go wrong?

no worries

Well, dreams are a way of compiling and sorting memories. Your brain uses them to "review" the memories in a way, so that's why your dreams have aspects of what happened during your day. If you had a busy day, your dreams are often more vivid and complex.

I once dreamt about a drum-playing shark that was yellow because its mother ate a lemon.
