| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. I realize this will be somewhat boring, yet I mention this because it disturbs me... For the past few years (at least two or three), I have not been able to remember any of my dreams to any extent but the thoughtless void of sleep. Most likely I am still dreaming and simply cannot recollect my imaginings upon wakening, but given how long it has been without these images ever coming to me I'm beginning to wonder if I dream at all. Does this have any deeper implications I should be aware of? |

You're probably just really tired. The more tired you are the less likely you are to remember a dream. Speaking of dreams, I had recently were I was fishing for gazelle in my driveway.

Fishing for gazelle in your driveway... exactly how does that work?

Last night I had a dream. I wasn't in it, it was one of those out-of-body dreams. Anyways, there was a view of a river, and then suddenly, the camera dives into the river. In the somewhat murky waters, I see a small group of roughly three or four reddish-orangeish crayfish-like creatures, about a foot long. Only, where you would expect to find a tail, there was another leg, and it was using it for swimming up-down (like a dolphin). Then, I realized they must have evolved their tails into another leg, essentially making them... undecapods. There were also other creatures, like this big white orca-like dolphin creature, that was swallowing what looked like a baby of it's own kind. Cannibalism through desperation perhaps? |

I just had a dream about the larval form of some weird Australian megafauna. It was either some kind of weird marsupial or some kind of weird ornithodire, I'm not sure. Perhaps both, or neither. But it was weird and endemic in some way. It looked rather like a nodosaurid. The most interesting thing about it is that it had some sort of larval form, almost like a gigantic grub. This creature was apparently pretty endangered, and no western scientists had ever seen the larval form (at least not alive), though it was known from aboriginal accounts. When I finally saw one of these larvae, it was quite interesting- it was in captivity, contained in a relatively small cage. I could definitely see that it was a 'vertebrate' and not a 'grub'; it may have had some kind of bone structure inside. It was very muscular and had a thick, wrinkled hide that was considerably folded. Its method of locomotion- similar to the 'rib walking' of a snake- was fairly evident simply by observing it. It had two long tentacle or feeler-like projections emerging from its 'shoulder' area and a thick, almost tortoise-like beak. If it had eyes, they were fairly small and I didn't really pay much attention to them. It was definitely reminiscent of a Snaiadi emmiform. The rarity of these creatures, and the even greater rarity of their larval form, clearly meant they were endangered and under threat of extinction. This is why researching the larvae was extremely important to scientists. However, this specimen, in its strength, somehow escaped from this cage, and also somehow let loose a lion in the same zoo/complex. Needless to say, faced with the threat of being run down by a gigantic vertebrate grub, me (and the aformentioned lion) ran into the veldt away from the 'zoo'. The larva presumably followed for quite a way, and I in turn was followed by the lion (not because it wanted to eat me... but apparently because I was a sophont and thus likely to choose the right routes and decisions... I'm not making this stuff up). Obviously it was pretty helpful to be accompanied by an animal that could physically defend against a megalarva quite well, though the fact that the escape of this larva sent one of Earth's most famous land predators running is clearly a testament to how fearsome it apparently was... Anyway, eventually, after running away from this creature, and a cross-country trek across Australia/Wisconsin/South Africa (I'm not really sure which, it kept changing. And apparently kangaroos existed in France and Iberia but they went extinct in the pleistocene), I made it back home, where I apparently had some kind of PTSD from being chased by this animal. Then the dream changed. Before the "Australian marsupial ankylosaur larva" part of the dream, I was complaining about someone creating a reconstruction of pine trees on Mars in a department store using a shoddily constructed crane. I'm not making this stuff up... Edited by T.Neo, May 1 2012, 08:24 AM.

The last dream creature I drew was not /nearly/ alien enough for my tastes. Spoiler: click to toggle It was an interesting dream, at least. It was a subject in an intergalactic zoo, the last of it's kind. It's planet was dying, and as they grabbed species to make a massive artificial environment to preserve what life forms they could, they only got one of whatever he was. Yep. But I did have a dream a few months ago that involved a dazzling, confusing array of creatures. They were like massive crabs, all heavy, shuffling limbs and jointed armor with stalk eyes, but they were vertebrates (I recall poking around the skeleton of one of them) and their armor was covered with long, flattened, iridescent filaments that spread and twitched like feathers. They came in all varieties, some were actually normal-crab sized, some were small and had delicate wings they flew on, most I saw were elephant-sized and glorious. |

It pretty much is. It's like a slinky, sexier predator. Less humanoid, too. But I guess it was okay, for being a huge obligate carnivore. Why yes, it was one of those dream. |

Despite its human-ish look, I love the alien's design. The jaw is more like those of the "Elites" (Sangheili) of the Halo series than those of Predators (Yautja). Here you can see a rough version of the Sangheili's jaw anatomy - the jaw comes in 2 thin segments rather than 1 thick segment like your alien.

I had an odd dream last night. I was in a sort of shark tank, and at first, I was just looking at some Bottlenose dolphins. But then, some odd creatures appeared. They looked like ornithomimids with flukes, but they still had their arms. I think that then somebody said that they were responsible for the myths of mermaids. Another dream I had, which I had when I was about 3, 4, or 5, I was downstairs with my Dad, and then a weird Yeti-like creature was walking down the stairs. I would say it was a Yeti, but from what I saw, it was a bit more squat than a Yeti, and shorter, with a big blue or purple nose. Then it roared, and it's teeth seemed very short, almost like the teeth of a piscivore, except I don't think I know any short-faced piscivores, save for us, though we are omnivores. Not many of my dreams involve hypothetical creatures. Edited by miocenemadness, Jun 7 2012, 09:54 AM.

That.... Sounds like a duck-wasp-dolphin-hedgehog. I had this weird dream, too. It was basically Sonic the Hedgehog, except realisticified. Silver was a shiny hedgehog (sorta like a quadrapedal werehog, if you've seen Unleashed) in a volcanic creater, Tails was some sort of weird tree-fox that had its back legs as wings attached to its butt, and Chaos... Well, he was sort of a giant world-eating slime mold/Chao tumour. |

That could make an interesting project, Nano; it could be a terraformed world where the only tetrapods introduced are foxes and hedgehogs. |
